I’ve been practicing orthodontics for 18 years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that this field moves fast - new tech, new techniques, new trends every year. Staying current matters. But so does knowing which things are actually worth chasing, and which are just noise.
So here’s my honest, personal take. Some of you will disagree, and that’s completely okay. This is just what nearly two decades of moving teeth (and watching jaws grow) has taught me:
A 3-year-old does not need an expander for their adult teeth to come in. However, early evaluations are key and help us catch potential issues like overcrowding, impacted teeth or sleep-related concerns before they become bigger problems down the road. Personally I think 7, 8, 9 are great ages for a first ortho visit but if you are concerned prior, we are happy to have a look!
The most important thing in our office isn’t just creating a beautiful smile, it’s creating one at the right pace and the right time. A functional smile with proper bite alignment is what actually keeps your teeth healthy for decades to come.
