When we recommend something here, it's based on what your body needs and what your goals are, not on what an insurance plan happens to cover that year. That's an important distinction. Let me explain…

Insurance networks come with a rulebook, and that rulebook shapes what a lot of offices recommend, whether they'll admit it or not. We stepped outside of it on purpose. We still file your insurance as a courtesy and take CareCredit. But the plan we give you is the one we'd give someone we love.

This fall, a woman in our community will have the opportunity to Smile Again.

It started with a birthday. For her 60th, Dr. Vicki Tatum asked for donations instead of gifts, and Charleston raised $15,000 to help someone smile confidently again.

We're looking for a woman who pours herself into this community as a caretaker, a volunteer, or the unsung hero who could use a new cape. Her story matters to us, so please tell us hers.

She should also be someone who could not otherwise afford this care, and a review of financial need is a required part of the selection process.

People ask if it's weird treating my own friends. The honest answer: most of my friends started out as my patients.

That's how it tends to go here. Someone comes in for a cleaning, and years later I'm at their dinner table. It's one of the best parts of doing this in the same Charleston community for as long as I have.

There's one kinda funny thing about it. It’s this way with all my patients but extra true for my friends. I want my work to be flawless. Because when we’re friends, we’re going to be hanging out so I want to make sure my work disappears. That not even I will be able to tell. I don’t want to spend every time we’re together thinking: I could’ve done that better.

That's a high bar, and it's exactly the bar I want. Because if it's good enough to fool me, it's good enough for you.

Everyone wants whiter teeth, and in the same breath everyone says the same thing: "But I still want it to look natural."

So how do you know when you've whitened enough?

Here's the rule we use in the office. Look at the whites of your eyes. As long as your teeth aren't whiter than that, they read as natural. Go whiter than the whites of your eyes and people's brains start registering something as off, even if they can't name why.

Some people have very bright whites in their eyes and can go brighter. Some can't. It's personal, which is why we match your shade here in our Charleston dental office instead of leaving it to a drugstore kit.

Whitening should make you look like a rested, healthy version of yourself. Not like a different person.

The person who checks you in on your first visit will very likely be the same one checking you in on your hundredth. That's rarer than it should be.

Our team has been together for decades, not months, with well over a hundred combined years of dental expertise in one office. Long enough that they'll remember your kids' names, ask about the trip you mentioned last time, and pick right back up where you left off.
