If you already know your kid has cavities and you've been dreading the appointment, I have good news. That visit is going to be one of the simpler ones.

You're walking in prepared. We look, we confirm what you already suspected, and we go straight to the useful part: the problem, the options, and a plan we both like. You came ready for that conversation, so it's a short one.

Parents feel guilty about cavities. They also beat themselves up over something mentioned back when their kid was a baby that they didn't pursue enough.

Miranda, one of our hygienists, keeps the full lineup stocked: strawberry, bubble gum, grape, mint, cookie dough, birthday cake and watermelon. Cookie dough and birthday cake are the most popular by a mile.

She has also tried every single one. Her pick, if she's skipping mint, is birthday cake, "because it tastes like vanilla icing."

Miranda says the parents are usually standing in the corner going, "I can't believe you're getting that flavor." Meanwhile the kid is THRILLED, and Miranda wants it that way. A kid who's excited about the toothpaste is a kid who's having a good time in the chair.

And in case your kid asks, the way some of Miranda's patients do: no, there's no sugar in it.

If you have a teenager who has no idea what they want to do after high school, bring them to see Suzy.

Suzy is a hygienist here at Oak Point, and somewhere along the way she also became the unofficial guidance counselor. When an older patient mentions they're thinking about a career, she tells them to go shadow someone who does it.

She does it because someone did it for her. Her own hygienist, back when Suzy was in high school, is the reason she went into this field. Suzy still repeats the advice she got: "Don't shadow just one office. Go to multiple offices. Make sure this is what you want to see."

Suzy says she's also just there to listen. If a kid is having a hard time at school, or needs an adult to talk to who isn't their parent, she's happy to be that person.

So yes, your teenager will leave with clean teeth. They might also leave with a life plan.

Before your child's appointment at Oak Point, Sara at our front desk looks up your insurance.

She does it so you walk in with a rough idea of what your plan covers. And if your plan needs a phone call to the insurance company, she makes the call. In her words: "We do our best to make insurance easy here."

Sara will be the first to tell you that insurance is never fun. She also spent time working in the back before she moved up front, so when you have a question about the treatment itself, she can usually answer that too.

The best time to book your child's next cleaning is before you leave the building today.

The before-school and after-school slots at Oak Point go months in advance. If you grab your six-month spot while you're standing at the front desk, you'll have options. And if life changes closer to the date, moving an appointment you already have is a LOT easier than finding a brand-new one.

If your schedule has some give in it, the hours in between open up a lot more choices.

You never have to worry about an emergency, by the way. If your kid is in pain, we find a time to get you in. Every time.
