Our hygienist asked what we were doing today. The patient said, "do anything you want."

So she grabbed her bag and headed for the door.

Kidding. Mostly.

But here's the sweet part underneath the joke. When a kid is relaxed enough in the chair to just hand the whole visit over and say do whatever you need, that's a good sign. It usually means the dentist has stopped being the scary place.

That's the whole goal around here. We want a cleaning to feel like no big deal. Some of that is going slow and explaining everything before it happens. A lot of it is just being people kids are glad to see.

So thank you for the full permission slip. We promise we used our powers responsibly, and no, we did not actually go home.

I'm in the back of my Charleston pediatric dental office finishing up notes on a patient and I hear this deep voice in the waiting room. Like, a grown man's voice. And I look at my team and go, "Did their dad come today?" And they just start laughing. "No, that's the kid."

This boy is thirteen years old, pushing six feet tall, and his voice dropped basically overnight. I've been seeing him since he was four. Four.

He used to sit in the chair with his feet barely hanging off the edge, and now his knees are practically in my way.

It's the weirdest, best thing about this job. You blink and they're a different person. But they still walk in and wave at the front desk like they own the place.

And I still remember the version of them that cried over a toothbrush. That part NEVER gets old.

A lot of parents worry that bringing up a bad past experience makes them look like they did something wrong. You didn't. Kids are kids, and dental visits can be a lot, especially the early ones. There's no lecture waiting for you here. Just tell us what happened, and we'll take it from there.

Knowing ahead of time is the difference between a child who struggles through the visit and a child who leaves feeling okay. That's the whole goal. We want the experience to be a good one for your kid, not something they dread.

The team at my Charleston pediatric dental office usually wraps up by about 4:15, 4:30 in the afternoon. There's maybe ten minutes of chit-chat. Someone's talking about dinner plans, someone's showing pictures of their dog, normal stuff. And then everyone heads out to their families.

I usually stay a little bit longer to finish my notes or clean up my desk. And sometimes, I just take a few minutes to revel in the fact that no one's asking me a question. No one needs anything. It's just quiet.

And then I get in my car and it's podcasts or audiobooks the whole way home. By the time I pull into the driveway, I'm a mom again. Henry needs help with something, Eliza wants to show me something, and the day at Oak Point feels like it happened a WEEK ago. But those ten minutes in between, that's the reset.

"My kid's teeth look fine. Why should I bring them to the dentist?"

I hear you. If everything looks good on the outside, it feels like an unnecessary trip. But pediatric dentists have years of additional training specifically in growth and development. That's not something general dentists get the same amount of.

So kids get referred to me for one thing, and I'll start looking around and find other stuff nobody's mentioned. And it's not because anyone missed it on purpose. It's because they weren't trained to look for it.

Like, teeth are one piece of it, but I'm also looking at jaw growth, airway, how everything's developing together. A routine visit catches more than you'd think. That's the whole point of coming in before there's a problem.
