This is one of my favorite patients and most challenging situations! A few years ago at only 7 years old, this patient came in with 4 implants placed at UNC Dental School and 3 permanent teeth and no other teeth. He needed dentures made.

The jaws keep growing on young boys until their early 20s, so typically implants are not placed this young, and dentures are not needed this young.

This patient has Ectodermal Dysplasia so his teeth never formed or came in. This affected his ability to eat, and confidence in smiling.

We were able to make an upper partial denture to hold onto the 3 teeth and engage the 1 implant and a lower full denture that attaches to 3 implants.

It is going to require a lot of adjusting overtime and the whole thing will need to be remade many times over the years. You can see where the upper front teeth are already starting to show some signs of wear and are starting to look a little small. Luckily it’s still fitting ok with some adjustments needed periodically.

Unfortunately, in a lot of these situations, this type of work cost a lot of money and it’s not considered medically necessary. People are working to change that and hopefully in the future, this type of work will be covered by medical insurance.

Molar incisor hypomineralizatiom is a phenomenon where the enamel doesn’t form properly in the incisors and molars leading to cavities that start quickly despite good brushing and they are very cold sensitive.

For this young patient they were becoming self conscious having this brown/yellow spot on the front tooth.

We took a very conservative approach here using ICON resin infiltration with esthetic composite resin layered over to fully blend away the spot to look better.

On the molars we applied Silver Diamine Fluoride to make sure those teeth were strong and not sensitive to cold. It’s a quick application of a liquid that will save those teeth from needing crowns or extractions.

At our office we stay on top of the latest products that make dentistry easier and allow us to prevent problems from happening.
