I ran to donate blood bc we were expecting many casualties. I was the last one that the blood bank location would let in as the number of volunteers surpassed their capacity. At some point, after verifying our identities a group of undocumented immigrants were told they cannot donate. The nurse was very apologetic, but she needed a legal ID to register each donor. Those people, while not living in the US legally should have had no loyalty, no drive to try to help, but there they were, waiting for hours just to be turned away. I remember I waited 4 hours before donating, people from all walks of life would come up with all kinds of ways to entertain the group to make the time pass faster. No one complained about the wait. The urge to come together and do something that mattered, even a little bit surpassed any political, ethnic, racial, or any other differences....... How the world has changed in only 2 decades is alarming. Let's not wait for tragedy to remember kindness
