Answer: The implant was Tooth 🦷 Did you guess correctly?
One of the biggest misconceptions about dental implants is that they happen in one appointment. In most cases, it’s actually a process that gives your body time to heal so the implant has the best chance of lasting for decades.
Here’s how it usually works:
First, the damaged tooth is removed. At the same appointment, we usually place a bone graft to help preserve the jawbone where the tooth was. This helps create a strong foundation for the future implant.
Then we wait about 3 months while your body heals and new bone forms.
Once everything has healed, we take a 3D scan (CBCT) of your jaw and use it to create a custom surgical guide. Think of it like a GPS that helps place the implant in the ideal position.
Next, the dental implant is placed into the jawbone. This titanium post acts like the new root of your tooth.
After that, we wait another 3 months while the bone naturally fuses to the implant. This process is called healing, and it’s what makes implants so stable and long lasting.
Finally, we take a digital scan of your mouth and have a custom crown made. The crown is attached to the implant, giving you a tooth that looks, feels, and functions like a natural one.
From start to finish, the process typically takes about 6 to 8 months, but the result is a replacement tooth designed to look natural and last for many years with good home care and regular dental visits.
