Because we limit our practice solely to e

ndodontic treatment, we can be efficient and precise. Root canal treatment is often no more uncomfortable than having a filling. Hamilton County Endodontics offers flexibility in accommodating emergency cases, so delays in treatment are kept to a minimum and patients can be relieved of dental pain quickly. We use state-of-the-art technology such as operating microscopes, CBCT (3-D imaging), digital imaging, ultrasonic instrumentation and fiber optics, to treat patients quickly and comfortably. Saving a natural tooth with root canal therapy offers the advantages of a natural appearance, efficient chewing, normal biting sensation, and it protects your other teeth from excessive wear. With proper care, most teeth that have had root canal treatment can last as long as other natural teeth and often for a lifetime.

**Important COVID-19 update**

There is no higher priority to us than the health and safety of our patients and dental team members. Like many of you, we have been monitoring the rapid changes to the local situation and guidelines as well as reports from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. We are keeping current on changes and recommendations as they occur.

In order to try to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, today the American Dental Association (ADA) and Indiana Dental Association called upon dentists to provide emergency dental care only and to postpone elective procedures for the next three weeks due to concerns for the health and well-being of the public and the dental team. The treatment provided in an endodontic office, however, is frequently emergent in nature, putting us in a difficult position in trying to find that balance between caring for our patients and protecting the health of our dental team and our community.

For now, we plan to continue seeing patients, but we will focus our immediate care and available appointments on patients who are symptomatic with a severe pulpitis or swelling. Our office hours will likely be in flux over the next few weeks, but we will continue to update our office voicemail if there are any schedule changes.

As always, we will continue to follow best practices as recommended by OSHA for sterilization and disinfection of instruments and surfaces, and we will continue to be vigilant in disinfecting surfaces in common areas. Per the ADA’s recommendations, we will also request that patients wash their hands upon entering and before leaving the office, and we will be rinsing with 1% hydrogen peroxide prior to examination. We will also be limiting visitors and requesting whenever possible that only patients scheduled for treatment come to the office. Questions regarding recent travel history and wellness will also be asked.

This is a challenging time for all of us, and we recognize that patients continue to require emergency dental care. Please be patient with us as we do our best to accommodate those who need appointments while adhering to recommendations made by our dental association and our public health officials.

Please take care,

Dr. Brian Tate, Dr. Michael Aslin, Dr. Blake Prather

Throwing up or sick with the stomach flu? Contrary to what you may think, don't immediately brush your teeth. Brushing right after vomiting can actually cause more damage since your stomach acids are still on your teeth. Instead, just rinse with water and mouthwash initially. Wait roughly 30 minutes after rinsing before brushing your teeth.

Myths about root canals:
*Root Canal Treatment is painful...
Actually, it relieves pain. Thanks to modern anesthetics, most patients describe the treatment as painless!
*Extraction is a better alternative...
While great advancements have been made in implants & artificial teeth, it is ALWAYS a better option to save your natural teeth, if possible.
*A root canal "kills" the tooth...
Root canals actually clean & disinfect the inside of a tooth and allow it to heal rather than causing further damage.

Did George Washington really have wooden dentures?

This popular myth does a disservice to our nation's first president, who, plagued with a variety of tooth ailments early in life, actually sought out the most advanced dental practices of his time.
Washington began losing teeth in his twenties. In 1783, at the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, he enlisted the expertise of Jean Pierre Le Moyer, a French naval surgeon who gained a reputation for his pioneering work in tooth implantation. Records show Washington purchased nine teeth in 1784, and documentation strongly suggests the teeth were meant for implantation or to be used in his own dental prosthetics.
Why real human teeth? The 18th century saw a rise in the use of real teeth to replace rotting ones, and with good reason. While ivory and bone were prized for their ability to duplicate human teeth, the solution would be a temporary one. Saliva will eventually break down false teeth made from bone, leaving the wearer with a rotten taste in his mouth and a serious case of halitosis.
By the time Washington became president in 1789, he possessed only a single tooth and needed new dental prosthetics. John Greenwood, considered by many to be the father of modern dentistry, made several sets for him during this time using gold, metal, and hippopotamus ivory—which has a thick enamel coating—to create upper and lower mouth plates connected by gold-wire springs. In one version, both human and cow teeth were secured into the plates using brass screws.
Although they were not wood, Washington's false teeth sound like they were torture to wear. Springs designed to keep the plates in place pushed Washington's mouth open, requiring him to remain vigilant just to keep it closed. Washington found them so irritating he often kept his speaking engagements to a minimum. His second inaugural address was the shortest in history at only 135 words.
