Your child's first lost tooth is a big milestone, and it usually starts around age 6 with the front teeth.

As your child grows, their back teeth are typically lost between ages 10–12, making room for permanent teeth by the early teen years. Most kids love to wiggle their teeth loose on their own, but if one is ready to come out, a quick, gentle twist with clean gauze can help. If you have any questions, give us a call or visit our website.

One of the easiest ways to get kids excited about eating healthy foods is to invite them to help you prepare them. Here's a recipe that supports tooth development you can make with your little one!

Why it’s great for teeth: Greek yogurt and milk are rich in calcium and phosphorus, which help strengthen enamel. Bananas are low in acid and contain essential nutrients like potassium that support overall oral health. Strawberries contain malic acid, which can naturally help brighten teeth. And unlike sugary smoothies, there’s no added sugar here!

Can cavities be contagious? While you can't “catch” a cavity, the bacteria that cause cavities can pass from one person to another through everyday moments like sharing a spoon, sipping from the same cup, or even a kiss on the lips. In fact, many babies are first exposed to these bacteria from their parents or older siblings long before their first tooth ever appears. This doesn't mean you need to stop showing your little one affection. It simply means that taking care of your own oral health matters more than most people realize. When the whole family brushes, flosses, and stays on top of dental visits, everyone benefits, especially the tiniest members of the household.

Pacifiers can be a lifesaver for soothing little ones, but did you know they can also impact your child’s smile over time? Prolonged use, especially after age 3, can affect the development of teeth and jaws. That’s why early weaning matters.

If your child isn’t ready to give it up just yet, you’re not alone. Try swapping the pacifier for a comfort item, gradually limiting use, or getting creative with a “bye-bye binky” routine. And when in doubt, Dr. B and our team are great partners in helping make the transition smoother.
