There are three different types of crossbites, depending on the area in the mouth in which they occur. A posterior crossbite is located in the back of the mouth; a crossbite in the front of the mouth is called an anterior crossbite, while a buccal crossbite also is in the back of the mouth, and involves the upper teeth aimed more toward the cheek than the lower teeth.

Did you know that early braces were constructed so that they wrapped completely around the teeth? This was the case until the mid 1970s, when direct bonding became possible and the bonded bracket for front teeth was born.

Orthodontics can be used to halt the sucking habit in children who are loathe to give it up. This can be critical, as sucking can create open bites where the upper and lower front teeth do not meet, leading to protrusive teeth and upper lips.

Special lovebirds with braces don’t need to worry about all the horror stories that come with braces. The urban myth of two people with braces kissing becoming stuck together by their braces is almost impossible to actually replicate. Now you won’t be able to chew gum, so be careful about your breath.

Are braces painful? In some cases, it can take a little while adjusting to braces. However, your orthodontist can give you dental wax that can be applied on the inside of your cheeks and lips so that the braces don’t irritate your cheeks and gums. Over time, your mouth will adjust to the braces and you may even forget they are on your teeth.

While wearing braces will keep you from eating some of your favorite foods, there are ways to enjoy some foods that are usually considered off limits. Hard fruits like apples and pears can be eaten after being peeled and cooked. You can even eat small slices of raw apple if you carefully use only your back teeth.

If an orthodontist had a nickel for every retainer their patients lose, they could probably retire pretty early. It’s very important to carry your retainer case with your wherever you go. People might accidentally throw away a napkin with your retainer on it, but not many people will throw away a brightly colored case.
