April is Oral Cance Awareness Month, and we want to encourage you to get screened and be aware of the risk factors. While smoking and to***co use are still major risk factors, the fastest-growing segment of oral cancer patients is young, healthy, nonsmoking individuals due to the connection to the HPV virus.

Some of the symptoms of oral cancer may include, but are not limited to:
- A sore on the lip or in the mouth that doesn't heal
- A lump or thickening in the lips, mouth, or cheek
- A white or red patch on the gums, tongue, tonsil, or lining of the mouth
- Trouble chewing or swallowing
- Swelling or pain in the jaw
- Loosening of the teeth or pain around the teeth

Many of these symptoms can also be caused by diseases other than cancer, or even by other cancers. So, it's very important to see a doctor or dentist if you notice these conditions so that the cause can be found and treated, if needed.

If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out at (231) 775-9797.

As a parent, you may wonder how important it really is to keep your child's baby teeth healthy, since they will fall out eventually anyways. We're here to tell you: it's important.

Not only are your child’s teeth essential for chewing, but baby teeth also help kids speak clearly and smile brightly, giving them confidence early in life. Additionally, they help set the proper spacing for adult teeth to come in correctly — a process that starts around age 6. Baby teeth lost to cavities can threaten the health of your child’s permanent teeth.

Keeping those baby teeth cavity-free also eases the fear and discomfort your child might feel about the dentist's office later in life.

Need to schedule a cleaning for your child? Give us a call at (231) 775-9797.

Many people don’t know if they grind their teeth; and, because the symptoms of grinding your teeth - such as headaches, a sore jaw, or tooth pain - are often common of many other things as well, it’s possible that you could be attributing them incorrectly.

Teeth grinding can be caused by anything from a sleep disorder to crooked teeth to to***co use.

For more information about teeth grinding, you can check out this article https://www.mouthhealthy.org/en/az-topics/t/teeth-grinding

If you think you do grind your teeth, make an appointment with your dentist to confirm it by calling (231) 775-9797. If the dentist does confirm it, one option will be to fit you with a mouth guard; however, your dentist may discuss other options with you as well.

Mouthwash is a great addition to your daily oral hygiene routine. Just like dental floss and water flossers, mouthwash can get in between teeth, reaching areas that your toothbrush can’t get to. This helps reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease.

If you’d like to know more about the benefits of mouthwash, talk to your dentist during your next appointment. To schedule an appointment, call us today at (231) 775-9797!

It can be easy to forget just how much each and every part of our body works together to keep us healthy since it often happens without us even knowing. Take saliva, for example.

Not only does saliva help wash away food from your teeth and gums, it also provides disease-fighting substances throughout your mouth to help prevent cavities and other infection, and helps keep the surface of your teeth strong by providing high levels of calcium, fluoride and phosphate ions at the tooth surface.

So, if you are experiencing dry mouth – or a lack of saliva – talk to your doctor or dentist as this may be a symptom of a medical disorder or a side effect of certain medications.

If you need to schedule an appointment, call us today at (231) 775-9797!

Have you ever wondered why dentists don’t recommend drinking orange juice with every meal? Or why they encourage parents to limit their kids intake of sugary drinks such as soda and sports drinks?

Foods and drinks that are high in acids can wear away the enamel that protects your teeth, changing the appearance of your teeth and opening the door for bacteria that can cause cavities.

Unfortunately, tooth erosion is permanent. If the enamel has started to wear away, your teeth may feel sensitive to hot or cold food, you may be more susceptible to cavities over time, or you may notice a discoloration of the teeth.

So, it’s important to make sure you’re taking care of your teeth by washing off acidic drinks you do have with water, keep up with your daily oral hygiene routine, and schedule your dental cleanings. Give us a call to set up an appointment today at (231) 775-9797!
