She was one of the sharpest people in the room her entire career,
a premier IT professional.

Then she started struggling to follow simple instructions.
She couldn’t complete a sleep test.

By the time she came in to discuss her results, she had just been diagnosed with dementia.

Her oxygen was dropping below 70% every night. Nobody had ever checked her sleep.

This week on The Sleep Show, I’m talking about the sleep apnea cases that don’t look like sleep apnea — no snoring, no obvious symptoms, just a slow quiet erosion of health that gets blamed on everything else.

Anxiety. ADD. Fatigue. Dementia. In so many cases, nobody checked the airway.

40% of people with sleep apnea don’t snore regularly. Children get put on Ritalin. Adults get SSRIs. And the oxygen keeps dropping — every single night.

Tune in Saturday at 8:30 AM on WDRC / Talk of Connecticut, or watch the full episode on YouTube now.

He came to me already diagnosed with sleep apnea.
Already on a CPAP. And still in tremendous pain, ringing in his ears, leg cramps, muscle twitches, neck pain, facial pain.

The CPAP was being worn faithfully. But nobody had looked at why it wasn't working.

When I did my assessment, I found he couldn't breathe through his nose at all.

His tonsils were massively enlarged from years of mouth breathing.
He slept on his stomach and had to put his fist under his forehead just so his face wasn't completely buried in the mattress.

And when I looked at his teeth — he had an open bite.
He only made contact on his last two back teeth.

He'd had it since childhood.
Not one dentist had ever suggested treating it.
Not one sleep physician had connected it to why he wasn't getting better.

The CPAP was addressing the symptom. No one was addressing the cause.

This is what I mean when I say I look at the whole picture. Because when you don't, patients like this just keep suffering — and keep being told their treatment is working.

I have strong opinions about Oreos. Especially the fried kind.

Deep fried Oreos are on my absolutely not list. Do you know what is in the center of an Oreo? Crisco cream. And Crisco is one of the worst trans fats you can put in your body. Hard pass.

Now, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups? I'll make an exception.
Except I actually make my own version.

Natural peanut butter, a little cashew, a little honey, and then nice dark chocolate over the top. No sugar, no junk, just real ingredients.

And honestly? I spoil myself when I do that. It tastes better anyway.

This is how I think about food in general. It is not about deprivation.

It is about knowing what you are actually eating and choosing better versions of the things you enjoy.

Your body, your sleep, your whole system, it all responds to what you feed it.

Now if you will excuse me, I have some peanut butter cups to make. 😄

This is something I wish more people knew before they decided to just live with a missing tooth.

Your back teeth are not just for chewing.

They are what holds the vertical height of your face open.

When you lose them and never replace them, your face literally closes down.

Your nose and your chin move toward each other. And as that happens, the airway in the back of your throat gets smaller and smaller.

I have not had a single patient come to me who has lost back teeth and never replaced them, who does not also have TMJ problems.

And nearly all of them have sleep apnea.

This is not about vanity. This is not about aesthetics.
A denture, an implant, a partial, anything that rebuilds that lost height, it is airway medicine.

It is protecting your ability to breathe at night.

If no one has ever connected these dots for you, that is exactly why I am here.

Something I want every person with tinnitus to hear.

That ringing in your ear, the one that never quite goes away, could be connected to sleep apnea. And I mean directly connected.

Here is what happens. Sleep apnea causes oxygen desaturation, more than most people ever realize is going on while they sleep.

When you repeatedly cut off oxygen to the brain, ear function is one of the first things affected. The blood supply drops to that area.

The pressure changes. And over time, people develop permanent tinnitus, sometimes for a decade or more before anyone figures out what is causing it.

In some cases, it progresses to actual hearing loss.

And the part that gets me every time, these people do not know they have sleep apnea. Because no one has ever tested them for it.

If you or someone you love has been dealing with unexplained ringing in the ears or gradual hearing loss, please do not let this go untested.

The answer might not be in your ears at all.

When you sit in my chair, I'm not just looking at your teeth.

I'm looking at your eyelids. Your tongue. Your hands. Your blood pressure. The wear patterns on your enamel. Every one of those things can tell me something about what's happening with your sleep, your airway, and your overall health — things that often go undetected for years.

Swipe through this carousel to see 5 things I look for that might surprise you.

This is what a truly comprehensive health assessment looks like when someone is paying attention to the whole picture — not just the chief complaint that brought you in.

If any of what you see resonates, I'd love to talk. I offer a free sleep and airway assessment — a $250 value — and it's one of the most thorough evaluations most people have ever had.

If you have ringing in your ears, sudden vertigo, or unexplained hearing loss — this episode is for you.

This week on The Sleep Show, I'm breaking down the connection between Ménière's disease and sleep apnea.

It's a link most physicians never make, and it's why so many patients with these symptoms bounce from specialist to specialist without real answers.

Ménière's is brutal. People can't drive. They can't get off the floor during a vertigo episode. They're told to manage their symptoms and learn to live with it.

But when we look at what's actually happening — chronic oxygen desaturation, pH changes in the body, fluid pressure building in the inner ear — there's almost always a sleep breathing component that nobody addressed.

I treated one of the most complex Ménière's cases of my career as part of my DTR mastership. A year and a half of work. She got through it.

There is always more to look at.

Ménière's disease is an inner ear disorder that causes sudden, severe vertigo, ringing in the ears, hearing loss, and an intense pressure or fullness inside the ear. For some patients it's debilitating — they end up on the floor, unable to get up, unable to function normally.

Years ago, as part of my DTR mastership, I took on one of the most complex Ménière's cases I'd seen. A year and a half of treatment. And we got her over it.

I share that not to boast — but because patients with Ménière's are so often told there's nothing more to be done.

Manage the triggers. Take the medication. Learn to live with it.

But the inner ear doesn't exist in a vacuum.

It has relationships with the jaw, the cervical spine, the airway, and the nervous system that most conventional treatments never address.

When you look at the whole picture — and treat accordingly — outcomes that seem impossible become possible.

If you've been living with Ménière's, vertigo, or chronic tinnitus and feel like you've exhausted your options, I'd encourage you to reach out.

There may be more available to you than you've been told.

I know that sounds like a big claim. But after years of testing, the number keeps holding.
If you came to me for jaw pain, clicking, or facial tension, it's worth asking whether sleep is behind it.

I think it usually is.

This is the cycle nobody is talking about, and it's affecting more couples than you know.

Sleep apnea disrupts your deep sleep. Without deep sleep, your body can't properly release the hormones that control reproduction.

Without those hormones, ovulation gets blocked, s***m production suffers, and the risk of infertility or miscarriage goes up significantly.

And then the whole cycle starts again the next night.

Dr. Bethaney Brenner has been connecting these dots for her patients for years, long before most providers were even looking at the link between sleep and fertility.

This is 2025 research that most OBs haven't fully absorbed yet.

If you or someone you love has been struggling to conceive, it may be worth asking one simple question first: how is your sleep?

Fix the sleep, fix the cycle. 💙
