If the bristles are frayed, bent, flared out, or chewed up... it’s not cleaning well anymore. Worn bristles can’t remove plaque effectively and can be rough on gums.
Kids often need toothbrushes replaced before 3 months, especially if they like to bite or chew on them. But if a toothbrush is wearing out quickly and it’s not being chewed, it may mean the brushing is too hard.

Dr. Romola Mascarenhas is a graduate of the University of Sydney School of Dentistry in Sydney, Australia, and has been practicing dentistry for over 30 years. She completed her general practice residency at the United Dental Hospital in Sydney in 1994 and moved to Los Angeles, where she has been practicing as a general dentist since 1998. From 1999-2001 Dr. Mascarenhas served as Assistant Director of the Special Patients Clinic at the University of Southern California’s Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry, treating medically compromised, disabled and elderly patients. Dr. Mascarenhas was an associate general dentist at a private practice in the La Crescenta-Montrose area for 20 years prior to joining the Ananian Dental Group. Dr. Mascarenhas is a member of the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, and the San Gabriel Dental Society. She brings with her decades of experience providing dedicated, attentive, and high-quality care to patients of all ages, and is especially adept at treating patients with dental anxiety or dental phobia.
