RJ Mitte in addition to acting and producing was a disabilities rights activist and anti-bullying advocate.
He stated, “Many people think that because some people with [cerebral palsy] have a speech impediment, they have lower intelligence, but that’s a myth. […] I’ve learned that no one can stop you from achieving your dreams.”
He described being choked, pulled to the ground, and having his hand broken by bullies and said, “This goes on day after day. This is always happening. Kids are killing themselves over this.”
Mitte also spoke about the importance of standing up for others, “At the end of the day, you can’t do it alone. Having those good people around me was very important.”
I was a fan of him from Breaking Bad and had the privilege to meet him at Alamo City Comic Con in 2015. He didn’t have a big line at the time that I went by, so he was more than glad to spend time just chatting with me, and I wasn’t prepared. 🥲 I was the awkward one struggling with my conversational skills, but he was so kind and smart. He was just a few months younger than me. 💔
His passing makes me so so sad. My heart goes out to his family, friends, and everyone who loved him.
I hope we can honor his memory by continuing the work he deeply cared about. Advocate for people with disabilities, challenge the assumptions and stigma they face, stand up against bullying, and don’t be a bystander watching someone be hurt. We never fully know what someone else may be going through. Lead with kindness and compassion.
