Sunday, July 18th is National Sour Candy Day! While most of us love the sour, tangy treats, many sour candies can do double the damage to your teeth. In addition to the sugar, the sour quality can also be harmful because of the increased quantity of acid. Consumed on a regular basis, the acid in sour candy can cause increased sensitivity, translucence on the biting edge of your teeth or increase the frequency of cavities because of weakened tooth enamel.

Did you know- sipping on drinks throughout the day is one of the biggest culprits to getting cavities? Some examples of drinks people may sip throughout the day that can cause harm are:

-Sodas
-Juices
- Tea/ Coffe with cream and/or sugar
-Sports drinks
-Water with lemom
-Infused water

Each acid attack lasts about 20 minutes and starts over with each sip you take. If you are continuously sipping throughout the day, your saliva is unable to neutralize the pH in your mouth and your teeth are being constantly bombarded with harmful acids. Spending the day sipping sugary drinks, that’s continuous exposure and is much more unhealthy for your teeth. It is best if you're drinking anything but water, to do so in one sitting, rather than throughout the day. If you drink a lot of sugary/ acidic drinks during a meal, that’s one big exposure, rather than smaller ones throughout the day, where you can then brush your teeth after eating.
