IN A TYPICAL DENTIST'S OFFICE
Many children get anxious in the dental room, especially on their first visit. So I began trying different ways to help reduce the stress of that first visit. I found that simply taking the child out to the waiting room or hallway often reduced a child's anxiety greatly. Children who otherwise

wouldn’t open their mouths would feel comfortable enough to let me do the exam and cleaning! This led to a much better experience for them (and their parents!). I remember when our daughter Azalea was getting ready for her first day of preschool. Like many kids getting ready for their first dental visit, she was so nervous! But her preschool teacher came to our home a few days before school started - she and our daughter spent some quality time together playing in her bedroom, they bonded, and she became excited about school. It made the transition to the first day at school so much smoother than I could have hoped for. This led me to appreciate the power of a gentle, personal approach to introducing children to big new steps in life - in the place where they feel the safest: HOME. And it led me to think... why not introduce children to dentistry in the security and comfort of their own "turf?"
