Are dental X-Rays (Radiographs) safe?

Most dental offices use digital x-rays which is 90% less radiation than the old film x-rays. The amount of radiation exposure in 2 dental x-rays and 1 Panoramic x-ray equals a 1-2 hour flight or 20 minutes in the sun. The purpose of the typical Bitewing x-ray is to look in-between the teeth, the area that is not visible with the naked eye. Without x-rays there is up to 40% of the tooth the dentist cannot evaluate. My recommendation for children is to have the Bitewing x-rays taken yearly (if there is no space between the back molars). Children's diets change, they are growing, hormones are changing and all of these can affect the teeth and potential for cavities.
Dr Todd's thoughts.....Digital x-rays are "safe" and the benefits outway the small radiation exposure. Ultimately, it is your decision as long as you understand the pros and cons. 😁🦷
