Part TWO of our eruption series is about permanent teeth!

👵🏼 Permanent teeth, as the name indicates, are our final set of teeth. (We only get two!) It’s important to take extra good care of them so they will last a whole life through.
😁 The standard time to start orthodontic treatment (braces) is once all the permanent teeth have grown in.
📈 During these years, there are more changes than just teeth. A lot of growth happens in the face and jaw to provide enough room for all the new teeth to come in. Growing/eruption pains may be noticeable for some patients.

Schedule your child’s next exam to check on how many of their permanent teeth have come in, and see if braces are in their future!

🦷 Come have a discussion with us about Fluoride!

With Utah banning fluoridated water, it’s more important than ever to understand the benefits of systemic fluoride (AKA that’s the fluoride you ingest.)

Systemic fluoride helps strengthen teeth from the inside out, making them more resistant to decay, even before they grow in! It also enters the saliva and works to strengthen teeth from the outside. 🛡️

Systemic fluoride comes in two forms: fluoridated water, which Utah has had for 60 years until this month, as well as an oral supplement taken daily. Children who have been receiving fluoride through their water will now have a significant drop in their intake. Taking a supplement will help ensure they still receive the proper levels to support tooth health.

While the debate is ongoing, science still supports fluoride. It has been proven to be a safe and effective way to reduce cavities and improve oral health.

💬 Questions? We are here to talk, not judge! Our goal is to provide the best care we can, and help educate and work with parents to ensure a safe space for managing children’s oral health.

No, we’re not talking about using a sugar scrub on your toothbrush…Exfoliation of the baby teeth means losing them!

🧚🏻‍♀️ The first visit from the tooth fairy will come around age 6-7, but can be even earlier like age 4-5!
🦷 Teeth will naturally get wiggly and fall out on their own. This is caused but the permanent teeth developing and pushing their way into the occupied spaces.
🦈 Sometimes a baby tooth can be stubborn and the permanent tooth will divert and grow in behind or in front of the baby tooth; we call this Shark Teeth! When this happens, we recommend coming in so we can help get the baby tooth out to make room for the adult tooth!

🦴 A common misconception is that teeth are made of bone. Though similar, they are not the same!

Teeth are comprised of various layers of calcified tissue of various strengths and functions:
💪🏻Enamel is sturdy and hard to provide strength for chewing and breaking down food.
🏗️ Dentin makes up the structure of the tooth. It also provides sensory input for pressure, pain, and temperature.
⚓️ Cementum is the anchor. It attaches to periodontal ligaments that connect the tooth to the alveolar bone in the jaw!
⛑️ Pulp contains the blood vessels and nerves that support the health of the tooth.

🦷PRIMARY TEETH🦷

🔎 It’s important to know eruption patterns and to watch for teeth coming in, this way oral hygiene can be managed accordingly.
🪥 Brushing should start as soon as the first tooth comes in, however, a gentle cloth used to wipe your infant’s gums is beneficial even before teeth arrive! Healthy habits start young.
👩🏼‍⚕️ A child’s first check-up is recommended within 6 months of their first tooth, or by age 1.

⏳Though there are average times when children’s teeth should be coming in, actual eruption patterns vary from kid to kid.
👶🏽 Did you know babies can be born with teeth?? Roughly 1/3000 infants are born with at least one tooth.

Have you ever wondering the meaning behind those seemingly random numbers behind the doctor’s name?

Now you do! DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) and DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine), though differing in title, are equivalent qualifications for dentists. The only difference is what school the degree was earned from and what title they offer.

👩🏼‍⚕️ Dr. Taylor received her DMD from The Oregon Health & Science University School of Dentistry in 1991.
👨🏼‍⚕️👨🏻‍⚕️👨🏼‍⚕️ Dr. Taylor has three sons, all of which followed in her footsteps into the dental field. Her oldest two received their DDS from UCLA. And her youngest begins schooling to receive his DDS from USC starting this August!
📃 Both degrees come with the same training, education, standards of excellence, and scope of practice. They just provide different letters at the end of the name!

Pacifier, Binky, Dummy, Soother… There are a lot of names, but let’s talk about how they affect a baby’s teeth!

🍼 Sucking is a natural reflex that infants use for self-soothing.
👍🏻 When it comes to a pacifier vs thumb-sucking, opt for the pacifier! Pacifiers are engineered to have a lesser effect on the bite. Pacifiers can also be taken away, making ending the habit easier. A thumb is always attached! Thumbs can also cause more severe issues with bite and palate.

🚫 Getting rid of the pacifier can be a challenge.
👏🏼 Positive reinforcement such as praise and rewards have been proven to be most successful.
🫵🏼 Negative reinforcement often leads to a greater desire to continue habit for added comfort.
🔧 Tools for success: Sometimes breaking the habit can be challenging. In this case a dental appliance can be cemented in to make thumb sucking uncomfortable. Thumb guards can also be purchased and strapped to the hand to prevent the thumb from going in the mouth!

What are your tips for breaking the binky habit???

What’s new in dentistry??

Silver Diamond Fluoride (SDF) has widely been used as a treatment for sensitivity of dentin (the inner structure of the tooth). More recently it has been found to STOP CAVITIES.

💉 No shots, no drilling, no pain. Simple application with 3-6 month follow-ups. We have seen it do wonders for patients who struggle with anxiety and fear of the dental office.

⚫️ One side effect of SDF includes a black discoloration of the decayed area of the tooth. The color is not harmful, but may not be aesthetically pleasing.

What do you think about SDF? Do you think the discoloration is worth having NO NEEDLES!? 🧐

Oh the exciting topic of ✨Tooth Decay✨

🔎 The doctor’s exam is not just about finding a cavity, but about evaluating just how big or small that cavity is!

⏰ Early diagnosis of demineralization provides ample time for intervention! This way we don’t have to jump straight to drilling and filling.

💰 Semi-annual cleanings and exams lower the risk for tooth decay that requires restorative treatment, which saves you money!

⏳ Once a cavity has progressed too far, there is no stopping it without treatment. It’s best to take care of cavities quickly so they don’t evolve into deeper decay, tooth pain, infection, or spread to other teeth !

Radiographs are one of the coolest things we do in dental. How wild that we can see the structures of the teeth, jaw, sinus, skull, etc!?

☢️ A common concern we see from patients is radiation exposure. Did you know that a years worth of dental x-rays have less radiation exposure than a single flight from California to New York?

🦷 Dental imaging is used to diagnose cavities, watch eruption patterns, discover infection and abnormalities, and even screen for oral cancer!

Many insurance companies cover x-rays at regular intervals. Regardless of insurance coverage, we always recommend yearly x-rays to ensure proper diagnosis.

Schedule your child’s next cleaning and x-rays soon, to check on their oral health!

We’ve almost all had them, but did you know how fillings are done?

🦠 Cavities are mostly caused by a bacteria called Steptocaccus mutans. When the bacteria eats sugar, it converts it into acid which wears away the enamel.

🦷 Filling procedures remove the decay and rebuild the tooth structure to its full function!

🪥 The BEST way to avoid fillings is to PREVENT cavities with twice-daily brushing and flossing. Emphasis on FLOSSING. 😉

Have you ever had a cavity???

Fluoride is a hot topic right now in Utah.

Gov. Cox recently signed a bill that will ban fluoridation of public water. This means that many individuals are going to have a significant decrease in their fluoride intake.

The ADA recognizes fluoride as a preventative measure against tooth decay. Without fluoridated drinking water, other ways of ensuring a high enough fluoride level include:

🪥 Using fluoridated toothpaste
🦷 Dentist administered fluoride rinse/varnish
💊 Dentist prescribed fluoride supplements

What are your thoughts on this new change in Utah?
