What Actually Happens During a Appointment With the Dental Hygienist?
Think a cleaning is just about brushing your teeth? There’s a lot more that goes into keeping your smile healthy! 🧼✨
Here’s what really happens at your dental cleaning appointment:
🔍 1. Oral Exam
Your hygienist starts by checking your mouth with a small mirror — looking for signs of cavities, inflammation, or other concerns that need a closer look.
🦠 2. Oral Cancer Screening
We check your tongue, cheeks, throat, and soft tissues for anything unusual. It’s quick, painless, and so important for early detection.
🦷 3. Periodontal Charting
This is a gum health check! We measure the space between your teeth and gums (called pockets) to monitor for signs of gum disease. The lower the number, the healthier the gums!
🪥 4. Plaque & Tartar Removal
Using a scaler, we gently remove sticky plaque and hardened tartar around the gumline and between teeth. This helps prevent gum disease and decay.
✨ 5. Gritty Toothpaste Cleaning
That polished, smooth feeling? We use a special paste and electric brush to remove surface stains and give your smile some extra sparkle.
🧵 6. Flossing Like a Pro
Even daily flossers can benefit from a thorough pass by a hygienist — we get those hard-to-reach spots and help remove any debris left behind.
💧 7. Rinse + Optional Fluoride
A final rinse clears out anything left. You might also get a fluoride treatment to help strengthen your enamel and protect against cavities.
👩⚕️ 8. Dentist Exam
Finally, your dentist checks your teeth, gums, and bite — reviewing anything the hygienist noted. You’ll leave with a clean smile and peace of mind. 😁
📅 If it’s been more than 6 months, you’re due for your next cleaning — and your smile will thank you for it!
