Dr. André Barbisan de Souza Transforming smiles and promoting oral heath by excellence in periodontics and implant dentistry. He is fluent in English, Portuguese and Spanish.

Dr. André Barbisan De Souza has more than a decade of clinical, chairside experience in periodontics and implant dentistry. Most recently, he taught periodontics and dental implant surgery at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Boston’s Department of Prosthodontics, where he also obtained his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry degree (DMD). Additionally, he holds a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D

DS) from the State University of Maringá, Brazil, where he received his training in periodontology and a master’s degree (MSc). He was a recipient of an International Team for Implantology (ITI) scholarship and conducted a fellowship program in implant dentistry at Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM). Dr. De Souza is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry (ABOI/ID). A prolific researcher and scientific writer, Dr. De Souza wrote or co-authored more than 40 articles published in peer-reviewed journals in the fields of periodontics and implant dentistry. He is particularly interested in technology applications in implant dentistry, minimally invasive periodontal surgery, as well as digital dentistry, implementing the most innovative methods to optimize implant planning and clinical outcomes. He has lectured at numerous international meetings for the ITI, Osteology Group, Taiwan Academy of Implant Dentistry (TAID), Asia Pacific Academy of Implant Dentistry (APAID), European Academy of Periodontology (EAP), Academy of Osseointegration (AO) and The American Prosthodontic Society (APS). Dr. De Souza is also an adjunct professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He is also a partner of DevRight, a national medical media group, dedicated to teaching presentation skills and implementing technology applications and developments in dentistry. Dr. De Souza previously practiced in Boston with several dental and specialty groups, providing dental implant surgery, periodontal procedures, and gum and bone regeneration. He recently moved south to Boca Raton with his wife, Paula, and son, Daniel, where he says they are delighted to be able to bike and play soccer all year long.

🇺🇸 Implant placement on ideal three-dimensional position can be challenging.

Image superimposition provides the guidance for adequate implant planning but the underlying alveolar process and adjacent structures sometimes set the difficulty level.

The key point is that significant change during implant placement will potentially affect the type, material and predictability of your future prosthesis.

A common question I hear is “but what is an STL file?”

Well, an STL (Standard Tessellation Language) file holds information about a virtual 3D object. This format describes only the surface geometry without any representation of color, texture or other common attributes.

These files are usually generated by a computer-aided design (CAD) program, as an end product of the 3D modeling process.

STL files contain a plain list of three-dimensional corner point coordinates and flat triangles. The generality and simplicity of this concept makes STL files compatible with many applications.

This is why this file format is used for digital impressions, virtual planning, surgical guide design and several more applications in dentistry.

There is always an interesting debate when choosing implant macro design and diameter for an specific site.

The evidence is: Narrow diameter implants present similar outcomes (survival rate and bone level) compared to regular diameter implants in the anterior zone. Similarly, it seems that there is no difference between tapered and cylinder implants macro design (please comment if you want to read references about it).

Conclusion: the use of narrow diameter or tapered implant in the anterior zone depends on each individual clinical situation.

Important factors to be considered: proximity to adjacent anatomical structures, need/predictability of bone grafting procedure and patient’s occlusion.

Planning (virtual 👨🏻‍💻or conventional 👨🏻‍🏫) is the KEY for successful implant surgery!

Do not rush for ex*****on until you are sure about all the steps that will take to get the outcomes as close as possible to what you planned!

But no doubts that virtual implant planning is the way to go when ideal outcome is your goal!
