These are the green flags that tell you your dentist is actually a good one. đź’™
Most of them come down to the same thing. Are they explaining, or are they just working on you?

A good one tells you what’s about to happen before it happens. They show you the plan on a screen instead of describing it while you’re lying there with your mouth open. They look at your whole mouth, not only the tooth that’s bothering you this week, because that tooth usually has a reason behind it. And they plan the case before they touch anything.

Then there’s the part that has nothing to do with teeth. Do they ask if you’re comfortable and actually wait for the answer? Does the team know your name when you walk in?

Save this for your next appointment. If your dentist ticks most of these, you’re in good hands. And if they don’t, you’re allowed to go find someone who does.

My favorite part of this job is the moment they see it. đź’™

Some people laugh, some cry, and some just keep looking, like they’re checking it’s really theirs.

I’ve watched this a lot of times and it still gets me.

Every case is different and results vary, but this reaction is the thing we’re actually working toward.

Thank you to everyone who let us film theirs.

Let me save you some money.

Those whitening strips from the grocery store work. Genuinely. If you want a nice change without spending much, that’s a good place to start.

What I’d skip is the viral stuff. Charcoal toothpaste, and whatever hack is going around this month, are not what gets you there.

Professional whitening sits at the other end. Stronger percentages, supervised. And the trays are custom made for your teeth, with instructions that fit your case. We have one hour treatments, deeper one hour treatments, and maintenance to hold it.

Teeth respond differently from person to person, so if you’re not sure which route makes sense for you, ask me.

Do veneers ruin your teeth? đź’™

Honest answer: bad veneers can.

That’s not a reason to be afraid of the treatment. It’s a reason to be picky about who does it.

When a case isn’t planned properly, when nobody started with the end result in mind, veneers can get aggressive. So can any dental treatment.

Planned well, it goes the other way.

With the materials and the technology we have now, I can see the finished smile before I touch anything and work backwards from there, with your face in mind.

Sometimes that means aligning your teeth for a few months first, so the porcelain sits on a good foundation.

Sometimes we barely have to prepare the teeth at all.

This is the fear my patients bring me most often, and I’d rather you ask about it than quietly avoid it.

So ask whoever you’re seeing how they plan a case. The answer tells you almost everything.

Have you noticed your breath changes through the day? đź’™

It tracks your saliva, your hydration and what you’ve been eating, which is why it isn’t the same at 8am as it is at 4pm.

Morning breath is the clearest example. Overnight your saliva drops and your mouth gets dry, and if you skipped brushing before bed, bacteria have been feeding for hours on whatever was left behind. Very common, and very fixable.

Then the day starts. Food comes in, sugar comes in, and they keep going.

Here’s the part most people miss. It’s not only what’s living on your teeth, it’s what’s living on your tongue. Tongue scraping changes how your breath feels more than you’d expect.

So brush, floss, scrape your tongue, and drink your water.

This is Brian’s story 💙

We asked him how his experience at Smile Institute has been. He talked about the things we work hardest on, being gentle during the procedure and checking in with him over and over to make sure he was comfortable.

But the part that stayed with me was about photos.

He’s always liked having his picture taken, and he says he likes it more now, because he knows he can smile big and his smile is what jumps out.

That’s the thing nobody tells you about dental work. You come in thinking about your teeth, and what actually changes is how you walk into a room.

Thank you for trusting us, Brian. Every case is different and results vary, but this is why we do what we do.

Do you really need a checkup every six months? đź’™

If you’re already going twice a year, congratulations, that’s better than most people manage. But for some of you it should be more often, and for others once a year is genuinely fine.

There’s no one size fits all here.

How often you come in should match your risk and your dental history. If you’ve had gum disease, you need to be seen more often. Same story if you’ve had a run of cavities.

Here’s why I push on this. Dental problems are almost always silent. By the time you actually feel something, it’s been going on a while, and now we’re talking about a root canal, or a cavity that got big, or a tooth that broke.

With images and with what I can see through my loupes, we catch things much earlier. That’s the whole point of the visit. A small fix now instead of the kind of procedure you really want to avoid.

So yes. Be consistent, and let’s work out the right interval for you.

If cold or sweet makes you wince, here’s what might be going on. 💙

Almost everyone jumps to the same conclusion. It’s a cavity. Sometimes it is, and when a cavity is the reason, it’s usually gotten close enough to the nerve that we’re talking about a root canal.
But sensitivity has other causes.

The catch is that you can’t tell which one you’re dealing with from your side of the chair. So come get it checked. If it turns out to be plain sensitivity, there are prescriptions and small changes that make a real difference.

And if it’s something more, you’ll be glad you didn’t sit on it.

If you need any help, you can always give us a call.

Drink your water.

I know how that sounds. But water is basically your natural mouthwash. It improves the quality of your saliva, and saliva is how your mouth cleans itself. It also affects your pH, which matters more than most people realize.

A dry mouth is the opposite of all that. It puts you at higher risk for cavities and gum disease, and it’s often what’s behind bad breath.
Plenty of things can dry you out. Some medications do it. So does stress, and so does caffeine.

But the most common reason is the simplest one, you’re just not drinking enough and you’re walking around dehydrated.

So before you buy anything for your breath or your gums, try the free thing first. Stay hydrated.

Why do we ask if you are pregnant, or planning to be? đź’™

So we can take better care of you and your baby. That’s the whole reason.
Pregnancy changes your hormones, and your mouth notices. Gums get more inflamed, and things start happening that finally make sense once we know what’s going on.

Knowing also lets us be selective. Which medications we reach for, and when in your pregnancy a particular treatment makes sense.

And if you’re wondering whether this means staying away from the dentist, it’s the opposite. I’d tell you to come in more often for cleanings while you’re pregnant. It sets your gums up well for afterwards, once your hormones settle.
