Sadly, Severe Early Childhood Caries is more prevalent than most of us realize. The cause of dental caries is multifactorial and we constantly have to make choices to tip the scale in our favor to reduce caries risk. Yes, baby teeth will eventually exfoliate or fall out, but untreated caries on baby teeth can lead to pain and infection with possible damages to the developing permanent teeth.
I had to extract all 4 front teeth on this 4yo child. There was significant bone loss causing the root tip on one of the front teeth to perforate the bone towards the lip.
The recommends that children be seen by age 1.
