Father Cyprian traveled all the way from Italy for a dental appointment at Big Sur Dental. Just kidding, he actually came from Italy to visit the Hermitage, where he used to serve as the prior. I am still flattered that he takes the time to come for a visit while he is here. It is always an honor and a privilege to care for the monks from the Hermitage.

First, the tooth is carefully cleaned and prepared. Any decay or damaged tooth structure is removed so we are bonding to healthy enamel and dentin.

Next, a gentle conditioning solution is applied and rinsed. This creates a microscopic surface that helps the material bond securely to the tooth.

A bonding agent is then placed. Think of this as the glue that allows the composite to chemically attach to your tooth.

The composite resin is placed in layers. Each layer is carefully shaped to restore the natural contours of the tooth.

A special curing light hardens each layer in seconds, locking the material into place.

Finally, the tooth is polished and finished so it feels smooth, functions properly, and blends seamlessly with your natural smile.

Modern composites are strong, durable, and designed to look just like your own teeth. It is one of the many ways we combine science, precision, and aesthetics to keep your smile healthy.

Three years ago this patient moved to Washington, yet every Christmas he still sends me a handmade ornament he creates himself. It means so much to be remembered in such a thoughtful way. Dentistry has never been just about teeth. It’s about the people, their stories, milestones, and the joy of watching life unfold. I’ve seen young women become mothers, kids grow up and leave for college, and heard squeaky little boy voices turn into deep, manly ones almost overnight.

Being part of those moments is a privilege. But the hardest part is saying goodbye.

Today, I’m mourning one of my favorite patients. He made me laugh from day one. At 79, even as he struggled near the end, he still had that spark. I will truly miss him.

Caring for someone over the years creates a bond that feels like family. And losing them feels just as personal. Rest in peace, Michael. You will always have a place in my heart.

She quietly handles a million moving parts, protects my time, solves problems before I even know they exist, and somehow still shows up with humor, patience, cooking and beauty tips (eyelashes) and Trader Joe shopping list advice. She has taken so much off my plate and off my mind, and I’m deeply grateful. The fact that my patients love her is just icing on the cake!
