Most parents leave a dental appointment and realize they forgot to ask the things they actually wanted to know. Here are five questions worth bringing up at your child's next visit, here at 318 or anywhere.

A great pediatric dentist should be answering most of these unprompted but knowing what to ask puts you in the driver's seat of your child's health. Save this one before your next appointment! 🦷

First visits are kind of our favorite thing. 🩵 There's always a moment, right at the end, where you can see it click that being in the chair wasn't so bad, Dr. Schmidt is actually pretty cool, and the goody bag doesn't hurt either. 😄

Welcome to the family, Ronald! We're so glad to have you! 🦷

Here's a question we get more than you'd think 👇

The honest answer? Yes, because cavities don't hurt until they're deep.

By the time a child is telling you their tooth hurts, what started as a small, easy fix has usually become something much bigger. Pain is typically a late signal rather than an early one!

The same goes for jaw development issues, early crowding, mouth breathing patterns, and tongue ties. None of these really loudly announce themselves. They just quietly develop until someone who knows what to look for catches them!

That's why we recommend those 6-month check-ins! Not just for clean teeth, but to see the bigger picture of how your child is growing. If it's been a while, or if you're looking to get established with a pediatric dentist, now is a great time to get back on the schedule! 🦷

School's out and summer has arrived! 😎

This is our favorite time of year because it's a reminder of why we do this work. Watching these kids grow up, visit after visit, year after year! That's the whole point.

If your family is due for a visit, we'd love to see you. Our June calendar is filling up but we've still got room!

Your child's next scheduled visit is important, but some things shouldn't wait. The tricky part is knowing which is which.

If any of these sound familiar, give us a call. It might be nothing, but it's always better to know sooner than later. We'd rather answer a quick question over the phone than have you wondering for weeks!

If you work in pediatrics, this probably looks familiar. 😅

A lot of parents come in thinking it’s something big. Too much sugar or not enough brushing, maybe?

Most of the time it's neither.

It’s the small, everyday habits that add up.

➡️ How often your child is eating
Little snacks throughout the day means those teeth never really get a break

➡️ What happens after brushing at night
Milk, juice, or even a quick snack can sit on teeth overnight and make teeth more prone to cavities

➡️ How thorough brushing really needs to be
Most kids miss along the gumline and back teeth (even when they say they brushed)

➡️ Mouth breathing
Less saliva production means less natural protection for their teeth

➡️ Sticky foods
Things like fruit snacks or crackers tend to hang around on teeth longer and can cause issues if not brushed off or rinsed

None of these are huge on their own but over time, they’re usually what we see behind cavities.

And if you’re reading this thinking, “wait…we do a few of these," welcome to the club! 👋

This is exactly the kind of thing we look at during visits and it’s almost always an easy fix once you know what to adjust.

"Board-certified pediatric dentist" ... what does that actually mean for your child?

Dr. Schmidt completed his pediatric dental residency and holds board certification from the ABPD. He came back to the Shreveport area specifically to bring that level of specialty care to this community.

When you bring your child to 318, that’s what you’re walking into. 🩵
