What to Expect: Follow-up after surgical procedures

Due to the Covid pandemic, we are not seeing patients for in-person follow-up appointments after routine extraction surgeries. Instead, patients will receive a 2-week follow-up call made by a member of our surgical team.

Certain procedures will require in-person follow-up(s). These specific surgical procedures are:
-bone-grafting
-implant placement
-pathology reviews

It is normal to have some discomfort after surgery. Patients will be prescribed medications such as Ibuprofen, Tylenol, and a minimal amount of narcotic pain medicine for pain control. It is important to follow our step-by-step written post-operative instructions that are given at the surgical procedure to ensure optimal healing.

When to Call Horizon: Abnormal Symptoms following Surgical Procedure
• Expect Initial swelling following an extraction surgery. The swelling tends to best at it’s worst on days three and four. It will begin to decrease slowly on the 5th day. However, reoccurring swelling weeks after procedure could indicate an infection. If you suspect infection, call the office and we will schedule an in-person follow-up visit.
• Acute pain that cannot be controlled by the Ibuprofen/Tylenol/Narcotic medication prescribed: This could indicate a dry socket. For more information on dry socket, visit our website at horizonosdi.com. Intolerable pain indicates that the patient should see Dr. Kyles; call the office and we will schedule an in-person follow-up visit.
• Uncontrolled bleeding after all steps in post-operative instructions have been followed: Patients should call the office and schedule a follow-up visit immediately. If this happens after-hours, please call Dr. Kyles directly (cell phone number is located on written post operative instructions).

What to Expect: Day of Surgery

Patients will be brought back to the surgery suite accompanied by their es**rt to review the post-operative instructions and prepare for surgery. Additional information will be given to the patient and es**rt at this time. Escorts will then be dismissed to wait in their car or our waiting area for the duration of the procedure.
For IV Sedation cases:
Patient vitals (BP/Pulse) will be monitored by an ECG during the entire surgical procedure. Dr. Kyles will start the IV and supplemental oxygen will be administered at this time. After the surgical procedure is completed, the patient will be observed for a short period of time to ensure they are ready to be discharged safely. When the patient meets the discharge criteria, they will be taken by wheelchair to their es**rt's car.

Dr. Kyles will electronically prescribe and submit medications to the patient’s pharmacy of choice the night prior to surgery. Escorts can stop by the pharmacy on the way home from surgery to pick-up any prescribed medications.
Along with a detailed post-operative care instruction sheet, patients will receive extra gauze and tea bags to assist with blood clot formation.

What to Expect: Preparing for your procedure

Key information for patients that are having IV Sedation:

-Patients must have an es**rt to drive them to and from surgery. Per Horizon’s safety protocol, the es**rt must be prepared to wait on the premises for the duration of the surgical procedure. Escorts can wait in their vehicle or in our waiting area

-All co-pays are due at check-in. The exact amount due will be communicated during the confirmation call

Key information for patients that are NOT having IV Sedation (Nitrous Oxide gas or local anesthetic only):

-Local and Nitrous patients can eat and drink per usual daily routine

-All co-pays are due at check-in

What to Expect: Consultation Appointment

At the consultation appointment, Dr. Kyles and the surgical team will review your health history and take your initial vitals. The surgical assistant will take any necessary x-rays, and a treatment plan will then be created and discussed.

At this appointment, our surgical team will also review the pre-operative instructions, have you sign consent forms, and answer any questions you may have. Next, you will meet with our Treatment Coordinator who will present a treatment cost estimate based on the insurance information you provided. In the case of extensive treatment plans, we may submit a pre-determination to your insurance to provide a more exact estimate. We will then schedule your surgical procedure for a later date.

Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing a series called “What to Expect,” outlining what patients can expect to experience at Horizon Oral Surgery and Dental Implants.

What to Expect: Making an Appointment

Before calling to make an appointment with Horizon Oral Surgery and Dental Implants, patients must start by getting a referral from their dentist.
