The term "deep cleaning" is actually a periodontal treatment called scaling and root planing. This type of cleaning is used when there is bone loss somewhere in the mouth. It can be generalized or in specific spots, but either way, it is a diagnosis of periodontal disease and requires a different type of cleaning than a "regular" cleaning, which is called a prophylaxis. If you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease and require scaling and root planing, it is important to treat this ASAP, as bone loss can eventually lead to mobile teeth and even tooth loss. If you have questions about the process, discuss it with your hygienist or dentist and have them explain it further.

Most people hear “veneer” and think they’re something used only in cosmetic dentistry, but they are also used for functional purposes as well. Most of my patients have significant wear so we are using veneers as a way to protect the teeth and create a healthy bite. Veneers allow me to be more conservative in how I prepare the teeth (versus traditional crowns) and I always love saving tooth structure!
