Wisteria
for my mom, who always preferred poems over presents, with love, Wendy.
You planted wisteria when you retired.
Dad built a lattice for it to grow.
But wisteria takes such a very long time, It was still quite small when you had to go.
When you were a girl you played in an arbor beneath intertwining wisteria boughs. But life intervened and you left it behind you, creating adventures and making new vows.
You lived an example of how to be true to the person who's also a mother and wife. You showed how love changes and grows and gets better with so much to learn and to share in a life.
You've left me with memories, left me with lessons on courage and casseroles, grace that shines through.
You've left. But you haven't. You live in my heart now.
When I see wisteria, I think of you.
