Dentists: If you receive reimbursements from insurance companies, you need to hear this!

The Louisiana Dental Association works with dentists, legislators, and dentistry advocates to make positive change in dental legislation at the LA State Capitol each year. We also monitor bills that affect dentists and their patients.

Here's a brief update from LDA Council on Governmental Affairs Chair, Dr. Gizelle Richard (NODA), about SB192, a bill that affects how dentists receive reimbursement payments from insurance companies.

Visit ladental.org/advocacy for a full breakdown of the LDA's legislative success this year.

1. Taking on some pediatric patients improves access to care across the state, especially in areas without pediatric dentists.
2. Providing care to patients' entire families, including kids, increases patient retention!
3. General dentists can absolutely learn the skills needed to treat pediatric patients effectively.

General dentists have the unique opportunity to provide care for pediatric patients who may not have access to a pediatric dentist.

In our upcoming Last Chance Seminar (Friday, Dec. 11, 2026, Baton Rouge), Dr. Carla Cohn will dive into the most modern methods and techniques for intra-coronal restorations, primary dentition full coverage, pulpotomies, and more.

Dr. Cohn will also provide practical advice on how to interact well with our youngest dental patients!

Last month, LDA Executive Director, Annette Droddy; and LDA President-Elect (Bayou), Dr. Mike Luminais, attended the ADA's Executive Director Summit and President-Elect Conference.

These conferences allow the LDA to connect with state associations and the ADA on member benefits, legislative advocacy, and access to care issues.

Slide 1: Annette and Dr. Luminais ran into Dr. Kristi Soileau (NODA), who was also attending the meeting as the American Academy of Periodontology President-Elect!

Slide 4: ADA President-Elect Thomas M. Paumier and LDA President-Elect Dr. Mike Luminais.

This course is perfect for dentists who have a pediatric sedation permit. An approved course (like ours!) is part of the renewal application for the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry. As far as we know, there is no other course like this one in Louisiana. Plus, you can take the course from your home or office, and it STILL counts toward your in-person C.E. hours!

The Louisiana State Board of Dentistry requires that dentists with adult sedation permits take six hours to renew every two years. Additionally, the LSBD requires that dentists with sedation permits for pediatric patients will have to do six hours of pediatric sedation renewal AND 6 hours of the adult sedation renewal every two years. If the permit holder has a pediatric certification and sedates ONLY persons below the age of 13, and signs a certification to that effect, then only the 6 hour in-person pediatric sedation course is necessary.
