Dental Hygienist Appreciation Week is an opportunity to recognize the essential role dental hygienists play in preventive oral healthcare and patient education.

Beyond clinical care, dental hygienists teach patients proper brushing and flossing techniques, discuss the impact of nutrition and lifestyle on oral health, and help identify links between oral health and systemic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes.

By focusing on prevention and early intervention, dental hygienists not only support healthier smiles but also contribute to overall health and long-term wellness.

It’s National Toothache Day — a reminder that tooth pain is never something to ignore. Toothaches can be caused by cavities, infections, gum issues, or even grinding. Regular checkups and good oral hygiene are the best ways to prevent dental pain before it starts.

If you're experiencing any discomfort, don't hesitate to give us a call at (207) 443-9400.

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues that support and surround the teeth, caused mainly by plaque buildup along the gumline.

It develops in stages, starting with gingivitis, where gums become red, swollen, and may bleed, and can progress to periodontitis, a more serious stage that can damage bone and lead to tooth loss if untreated.

Gum disease can be prevented by brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and maintaining regular dental checkups and cleanings.

Today is National Flossing Day, a small-but-mighty celebration of one of the most important (and most overlooked!) parts of oral health. Flossing helps remove plaque, prevent gum disease, and keep your smile healthy for years to come.

As the saying goes: "Floss the ones you want to keep!"

💙 November is Mouth Cancer Action Month 💙

Every year, thousands of people are diagnosed with mouth cancer, yet many cases are found too late. Early detection saves lives — and it all starts with being aware and getting checked.

Why getting checked matters:
- Mouth cancer can appear anywhere in the mouth, tongue, lips, or throat.
- It often develops without pain or obvious symptoms in the early stages.
- A simple, painless oral screening by your dentist or doctor can catch it early — when treatment is most effective.

Be mouth aware — know the signs:
- Ulcers that don’t heal within 3 weeks
- Red or white patches in the mouth
- Lumps, swelling, or changes in the mouth, lips, or neck
- Persistent hoarseness or difficulty swallowing

How to reduce your risk:
- Quit smoking or using to***co
- Limit alcohol consumption
- Protect your lips from sun exposure (use SPF balm)
- Eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables
- Get an oral cancer screening every year during your dental visit

Together, we can save lives through early detection and prevention.
