Those with an eating disorder may cause temporary or permanent damage to their teeth and mouth. Self-starvation, bingeing, or self-purging often leads to a deficiency of calcium, iron, and vitamin D, as well as other nutrients needed for good dental health.

◉ Calcium plays a role in building strong and healthy jawbones. Not having enough calcium can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Lack of calcium can cause teeth to loosen and possibly fall out.

◉ Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium. It’s also anti-inflammatory, which boosts your immune system and also helps fight gum disease.

◉ Iron helps transport oxygen throughout your body if the number of healthy red blood cells in your body drops, your ability to fight infections decreases.

◉ Binge eating can cause excess stomach acid. When stomach acid reaches the mouth, it can burn the oral tissues and eat away at your teeth.

◉ Vomiting brings harsh acid from the stomach. Stomach acid repeatedly flowing over the teeth can wear away the enamel.

◉ Vomiting and poor nutrition can cause dry mouth. The salivary glands swell and decrease production. This leads to chronic dry mouth, and the risk of cavities, tooth loss, and infections in the mouth increases.

People have their teeth pulled at any given age and usually experience discomfort that can last for a few days. However, the pain does not resolve for some people, and it can worsen due to a common condition known as a dry socket. Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) occurs in less than 5% of people after their wisdom teeth are extracted. When you look at the area of your missing tooth, you may notice a visible opening, and instead of a dark spot, you see a white top part of your bone. The pain generally spreads to the whole side of your face and can radiate to your ears. You may experience a change of taste in your mouth, leaving a foul smell or bad breath.

As long as you maintain excellent oral hygiene for your dry pocket, it should typically last for a week or less. In rare extreme cases, the dry socket can be infected, causing you to have fever, chills, swelling, redness, and possibly a pus discharge. Don't hesitate to get in touch with us if you notice any of the symptoms following your extraction.

When a child is born with an opening in the mouth's roof, it is called a cleft palate. The palate or top of the mouth has two parts: the hard palate in front and the soft palate in the back. The hard palate is attached to the skull. The soft palate is the skin that extends from where the hard palate ends to the back of the throat. Babies can be born with a split in one or both parts of the palates.

A cleft palate makes it hard for children to eat and speak. For your child to speak and swallow normally, the palate needs to seal off the inside passage of the nose from the throat. Food and liquid go up through the opening into the nasal passage instead of down the throat into the stomach.

Cleft palate is one of the most common problems found in newborn babies. The cause is unknown, but scientists are learning that genetics and nutritious food matter.

The only way to repair a cleft palate is by surgery. Your child will be in the operating room for only a few hours, and the hospital stay is usually 1 to 3 days. The goal is to close the opening in the roof of the child's mouth.

Your body is a complex machine that needs the proper care and nutrients to maintain. The food that you choose to eat affects your general health as well as your oral health. If you consume too many sugar-filled beverages or non-nutritious snacks, you can be at risk for tooth decay. Tooth decay is the most common and chronic childhood oral disease, but the positive news is that it's entirely preventable.

It Is recommended to eat a balanced diet and limit between-meals snacks. For good dental health, please continue reading more below for helpful tips to keep in mind when choosing your food and beverage intake.

• Drink plenty of water
• Eat a variety of each major food group, such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and low-fat/fat-free dairy products.
• Limit your snack intakes, but if you must, find something healthy like fruits, vegetables, or a piece of cheese.
• Always remember to brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
• Floss daily and include mouthwash in your oral routine

With regular dental care, we can help you prevent oral problems and catch those in the early stages with the proper treatment.

People experience dental emergencies every day. Dental emergencies can range from gum disease to tooth decay, but the most common one is a chipped tooth. While these are just some of the most common dental emergencies, there are more that you should be aware of. The best way to preserve your oral health is to know what to do when an emergency happens to prevent long-term damage. It is best to respond with fast, immediate treatment to maintain the longevity of your teeth for good oral health.

The most common dental emergencies:

Toothache.
Pain is never a good sign since it indicates several conditions that can result in permanent tooth loss. Sometimes toothaches can be manageable, but specific symptoms such as swelling or inflammation will require immediate dental care.

Chipped (Broken) Teeth.
Having your teeth chipped or broken can cause immense pain. We recommend rinsing your mouth with warm water and applying gauze to the bleeding site. A cold compress to the part of your face closest to the chipped tooth can help reduce swelling and relieve pain before you can see us.

Knocked-out Tooth.
Sports injuries are the leading cause of knocked-out teeth due to the physical extremity. Depending on the injury, there are circumstances where you can disinfect the teeth and place them back temporarily. The sooner you can do this, ideally within an hour, the better the chance of restoring the tooth; however, if you cannot reinsert it, it's best to preserve it for emergency restoration.

Broken Orthodontics.
Having braces is tough to manage, and the metal wires and brackets are designed to withstand wear and tear; however, they can break or stick out to poke the cheeks and gums. It can cause significant discomfort, so be sure to have orthodontic wax in the meantime before you can see us.

Lost Fillings/Lost Crowns.
Crowns and fillings are essential to your teeth since they are used to restore previously damaged teeth, so when these breaks, you will need to get them treated immediately to avoid further damage or reinfected.

Abscess.
Infection in the mouth is trouble, especially near the tooth's root or the space between the teeth and gums is serious. Left untreated, it can spread to the other healthy gums, tissues, and teeth to the rest of your body. If you experience soreness or tenderness in your gums that is too painful, call us immediately to help treat you before it worsens.

Bleeding After Tooth Extractions.
It is normal to feel pain post-op and bleeding but excessively requires attention because the bleeding may persist without proper treatment. In the meantime, bite on gauze to apply pressure.

On top of the Coronavirus pandemic, the cold and flu season is right around the corner as you notice more coughs and sniffles. The bad news is that having a cold or the flu can negatively affect your teeth. Your overall health and dental health are strongly connected. As dentists, we want you to remain healthy, but if you happen to get sick, please see below for some tips to help protect your dental health.

Pay attention when you brush your teeth. You must spend at least two minutes brushing your teeth twice a day. Be wary when you have cough drops in your mouth. The sugar will remain on your enamel, so brushing your teeth is even more critical.

Choose sugar-free cough drops as an option since sugar can cause tooth decay and cause harm to your gums.

Replace your toothbrush once your sickness is over. The American Dental Association recommends you replace your toothbrush every three to four months, so why not ensure that zero bacteria can harm your teeth and gums by replacing it immediately?

A dry mouth can increase your chances of gum disease and cavities. Since medications cause dry mouth, be sure to stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water since staying hydrated with good saliva production is important.

Gargling help reduces harmful bacteria and plaque. Gargling with salt water after you potentially throw up is an excellent way to rinse before you brush your teeth. Add a mixture of water and one tablespoon of baking soda to wash away the bad acid.

Cleft lip (cleft palate) is a common birth condition that can occur alone or as part of a genetic condition or syndrome. The symptom arises from either the opening in the roof of the mouth or the opening in both lips and the top of the mouth. This makes it difficult for the child to speak or eat correctly. However, with surgery, it can be restored to provide normal functioning with minimal scarring. Orofacial clefts, especially cleft lip with or without cleft palate, can be diagnosed during pregnancy by routine ultrasound. They can also be diagnosed after the baby is born, especially cleft palate. However, sometimes certain types of cleft palate may not be analyzed until later in life.

Getting your tooth extracted in adulthood is sometimes needed due to the damage, trauma, or decay. Other reasons include:

Crowded Mouth - The dentist sometimes extracts the teeth to prepare the mouth for orthodontic care. The goal of orthodontic treatment is to properly align the teeth, which may not be possible if your tooth is too big. A tooth cannot erupt from the gums if there is no room for it. Therefore, the dentist will recommend pulling it.

Infection - Once a tooth is decayed or damaged relating to the pulp, it may need to be pulled to prevent it from infecting the other surrounding teeth. Once the bacteria enter the pulp, which often leads to an infection, Root Canal Therapy is the first step before the extraction.

Risk of Infection - Suppose you have a low or immune-compromised immune system (for example, undergoing chemotherapy or having an organ transplant). In that case, you will need to extract the tooth due to the spread of bacterial infection that may attack other parts of your body.

Dentists and oral surgeons perform the tooth extraction with great care and compassion. To ensure that the extraction will be painless as possible, the dentist will give you an injection of a local anesthetic to numb the area. This allows the surrounding of the tooth extraction is less painful. Once the tooth is pulled, a blood clot will form in the socket to protect against the exposure of the bone. The initial healing period usually takes about one to two weeks. New bone and the gum tissue will grow into the gap.

The outer layer of the teeth is called the enamel, which protects the teeth against physical and chemical damage. The enamel is the first line of defense for your teeth against many chemicals exposed to food, beverages, and bodily fluids. The tooth enamel is made of tough tissues—the most complex tissue of the human body, more rigid than bone. Enamel is prone to wear and tear over the years, which results in enamel erosions.

Enamel erosions cause symptoms such as tooth sensitivity and tooth stains. Once the enamel is worn, it can not be reversed, meaning it won’t grow back. The signs also include,

• High sensitivity to temperature and textures
• Cracks and chips
• Tooth stains or discoloration
• Indentations or ridges on the surfaces of the teeth
• Intense pain

There are many causes of enamel erosions based on dietary and food a person consumes in their daily life, particularly:

• Sugary foods: Candies, ice cream, syrups
• Starchy foods: White bread
• Acidic foods: Citrus fruits, apples, berries
• Fruit juices/drinks
• Carbonated soda: contains damaging citrus acids and phosphoric acids on top of the high concentration of sugar

Physical causes include teeth grinding, chronic acid reflux (known as GERD), xerostomia, medication, eating disorders, or genetic disorders.

If you are experiencing enamel erosions, you can immediately prevent them from worsening by visiting your dentist for more information and treatment. For more inquiries, questions, or concerns, don't hesitate to contact us and let us know what we can do to help.

Tooth decay damages the tooth’s surface and enamel. Tooth decay occurs when bacteria in the mouth create acids that attack the enamel, which leads to cavities. If tooth decay is left untreated, it can lead to pain, infection, and even permanent tooth loss.

Our mouths are full of bacteria, some are helpful, and some are harmful. When the harmful bacteria is combined with food, it forms a soft, sticky film called plaque. The plaque uses the sugar and starch from food or beverage consumption to make the acids deteriorate the minerals on the tooth enamel. Over time the plaque hardens into tartar to cause gum disease.

The main factors for tooth decay are lack of oral hygiene care and too much sugary/starchy food consumption, including:

• People who don’t have enough saliva due to medications or certain medical conditions
• People who do not have enough fluoride
• Those who are very young such as babies and toddlers who still bottle feed at night
• Those who are older who have receding gums and more wear on their teeth

In early signs of tooth decay, there are usually zero symptoms. However, when tooth decay gets worse, it can cause:

• Tooth pain
• Tooth sensitivity
• White specks or stains on the surface of the tooth
• Cavities
• Infection

To***co has severe harmful effects not only on your overall health but specifically on the soft and hard tissues of your mouth. Smoking will damage your overall health and cause fatal gum disease. Many people do not realize the damage that smoking can do to their mouth, gums, and teeth. Smoking leads to tooth stains, gum disease, tooth loss, and mouth cancer. People who smoke are more prone to produce bacterial plaques, which lead to gum disease. Smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream; therefore, infected gums will not be able to heal, reduces the vitamin C levels to keep gums healthy, and raises the temperature in the mouth, which causes damage to important cells. Ci******es contain over 4,800 chemicals, 69 known to cause cancer. Smoking ci******es and chewing to***co cause prolonged bad breath. Harmful bacteria do not get rinsed away naturally, thus causing bad breath and tooth decay.

For babies, teething begins around four to eight months and continues until 2 ½ to three years for a complete set of molars. During the teething stage, symptoms may cause the baby to be irritable and disrupt their sleep, such as swelling/inflammation of the gums, excessive drooling, loss of appetite, rash around the mouth, low-grade temperature change, and increased gum-rubbing.

During the teething phase, with a baby's constant drooling, use a bib to keep your baby's chin as dry as possible to avoid irritation to their skin. To help soothe a teething baby, gently rub their tender gums with a clean finger of a moist gauze pad. You can give them a pure teether to chew on, which can help them soothe their gums. A teething ring is a popular option that babies can chew on to ease their discomfort. Chilling a teething call in the refrigerator can help tremendously because it provides a soothing coolness to their gums. With time, it is best to introduce your baby to more complex foods such as cold fruits or vegetables to become their natural soother.

Teething is a natural part of an infant's growth and will eventually pass. The first dental visit is recommended (depending on the child) at 6 to 12 months for a complete examination of the teeth, gum, jaws, and oral tissues to check the growth and development. Contact your child's pediatrician or family doctor for any specific concerns or prolonged fussiness or discomfort for more information.
