Dental insurance can be helpful, but many patients are surprised to learn how limited most plans truly are. In many cases, annual maximums are quickly used up early in the year, especially when patients need more than routine preventive care. These maximums often have not significantly increased in decades, despite the rising cost of modern dental materials, technology, and treatment standards.

Unfortunately, many procedures that are essential for protecting long-term oral health — such as night guards, bone grafting, scaling and root planing, certain crowns, implants, or other restorative treatments — are frequently only partially covered or sometimes denied altogether, even when clinically necessary. Insurance companies ultimately determine benefits based on the patient’s specific plan and policy limitations, not necessarily on what a doctor recommends for optimal care.

While our office is always happy to help submit pre-authorizations and estimate benefits as a courtesy to patients, it is important to understand that pre-authorizations are never a guarantee of payment. Final coverage decisions are made by the insurance company once claims are processed, and benefits can change, be downgraded, or denied at any time.

Our priority will always be recommending the treatment that best supports your health, comfort, function, and long-term outcome — not simply what insurance chooses to cover.
