Meet Ghost, he is a gelding rescued by Alaqua Animal Refuge in Freeport that I had the pleasure of performing a dental on this week. Upon further examination, I discovered Ghost has additional upper canine teeth on both 104 & 204! First time in four years of practice that I’ve ever seen such a thing. Pretty neat day ❤️
A little fun fact but the first horse I ever performed a float on was named Ghost. He was a malnourished Arabian who was rescued by a sweet friend of mine. I’ll post his pictures in the comment section of this post for reference 🙂

Horses are born with deciduous (baby) teeth that are referred to as ‘caps’ that naturally shed as a horse ages. Incisor caps begin to shed when a horse reaches about 2.5 years of age and continue to shed until the horse reaches about 4.5 years. The filly pictured below has shed both #402 and #302. Young horses may require more frequent dental examinations as there are exceptional amounts of dental changes occurring during the first five years of a horse’s life.
