Why Do Dental Implants Cost So Much in the United States?

Dental care, in general, has become more expensive in recent years. On average, the cost of dentistry increases by about 5.14% per year. This is above the typical annual inflation rate of 4.17%. Since the 1960s, the cost of dental services has increased by 1,728%. There are many reasons that restorative dental care costs more in the United States, including the cost of materials, labor, and overhead that dental clinics need to factor into their charges to patients. Let’s take a look at these more closely.
The materials used in dental implants
Dentists use a wide range of materials for dental implant treatment. Most dental implants are made from titanium alloys. Some dentists continue to use materials like gold, steel, cobalt, chromium, and copper. The actual crowns mounted on the implants can be metal or porcelain fused to metal, resin, or ceramic. Due to fluctuating demand, these materials have increased in price over recent years.
The cost of a dental expert’s time
When you get dental implants, you work with a cosmetic dentist. Some dental implants are done by general dentists, but most are done by a cosmetic dentist who has received additional training in implant dentistry. Implant dentistry training often involves as many as four years beyond dentistry school.
When it comes to dental implants, the actual treatment itself is as unique as the patients. A cosmetic dentist will use advanced imaging technology to render a three-dimensional picture of the patient’s mouth. Some treatments may require tissue grafting. The expertise required to administer an implant treatment is one of the cost factors in dental implants.
Dental implants require multiple appointments
Dental implants require multiple appointments. This is another factor that drives cost. When you get an all-on-four or all-on-six dental implant treatment, you will see the dentist twice six to eight months apart. A lot of custom work happens between these two appointments, including:
• Creating a mold for the creation of your implants from your computer imaging.
• Construction of your final implants in a lab.
• The actual fitting of your implants (when you arrive back for your second appointment).
Specialized equipment for dental implants
Cosmetic dentists must also invest monetary resources into specialized equipment, especially the computer imaging technology that they use. To do bone and tissue grafting, there are special punch kits and drill kits are required. Other grafting equipment is also essential. The cost of cosmetic dental equipment ranges based on the size of the clinic and the number of patients the dentist will be working with. For a smaller clinic, they might spend $25,000 to $50,000 for equipment. Larger clinics doing more specialized work might spend as much as $500,000 on equipment to work with patients.
Why do dental implants cost less in Cancun and Costa Rica?
For dental implants, and dental care in general, done in Mexico, the cost of living is the main factor for controlling price. Materials required for dental implants simply cost less. On average, you can expect to pay 50% to 70% less for cosmetic treatment when you select dental tourism as an option. If you want to work with the best cosmetic dentist, choose The Dental Concierge. You will get the opportunity to work with a world-class cosmetic dentist who will get you the best implants possible at a fraction of the cost.

What Causes Tooth Decay

The majority of people will develop cavities and tooth decay at some point in their life. 97% of people will have at least one cavity in their adult teeth. The majority of Americans (178 million) are missing at least one tooth and 40 million Americans are missing all of their teeth. Cavities and advanced tooth decay are the number one reason people get dental implants. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons some people develop cavities and lose teeth while other people don’t.
Brushing and Flossing Habits
The vast majority of Americans have good brushing and flossing habits. Around 70% of Americans brush twice per day. People who brush their teeth have a 15% chance of getting cavities, while people who don’t brush regularly have a 40% chance of getting cavities. Brushing and flossing habits are a good predictor of overall dental health.
Saliva Composition
Everyone’s saliva has a slightly different chemical composition. Some people have higher concentrations of calcium and phosphate. In combination with fluoride, people with higher concentrations of calcium and phosphate have a lower saliva acidity level, which reduces the likelihood of cavities.
Tooth Morphology
Everyone’s teeth are shaped differently. Some people have abundantly smooth teeth while others have ridges and crevices. Ridges and crevices are more susceptible to tooth decay and cavities. This is another reason some people might be more prone to tooth decay than others.
At What Point Should a Patient Get Dental Implants?
The most common solution for cavities and tooth decay is fillings. Some dentists will provide patients with root canals and crowns to help save the tooth. But after a while, root canals and crowns give way. Generally, a root canal will last around ten years (in about 86% of people). Some people will have their root canal fail in as little as one year. Here are some reasons to consider getting dental implants:
• You need to have several teeth replaced.
• You do not want to get dentures or any more crowns.
• You want to be able to eat comfortably and enjoy the foods you like.
• You want to feel confident about your smile.

People experience varying degrees of tooth loss and decay based on a wide variety of different factors. The Dental Concierge has a proven process for getting your smile back to the way you want it. Dental implants generally last for a lifetime, whereas crowns and other “fixes” may last for as little as one year up to fifteen years.

Going With a Cosmetic Dentist That Is AACD Accredited
Many people go with a cosmetic dentist in Costa Rica or Cancun without doing their research. At The Dental Concierge, our Costa Rica and Cancun cosmetic dentist is AACD accredited. This accreditation is one of the most intensive that a dentist can get. It also ensures that the dentist you are working with is of the utmost quality.
What Is the AACD?
The AACD is the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Membership in the AACD makes sure that patients get the highest standard of care possible. Starting in 1984, the AACD only had 60 dentists. As the organization has grown in size over the years, it has become the world’s largest organization for cosmetic dentists.
What Does It Take To Be an Accredited Member of the AACD?
A dentist seeking to become AACD accredited goes through a rigorous process. First and foremost, the dentist must take a written examination. After the written examination, a five-year period begins where the dentist must take two courses, the dentist must also submit five clinical case studies where they demonstrate their skills and clinical excellence. These case studies are reviewed by the top cosmetic dentists in the world. Lastly, there is an oral examination. The dentist must pass all portions of the process to become an accredited member of the AACD.
Can I Expect To Find Many AACD Dentists When I Go Out Of the Country?
If you are going out of the country for cosmetic dental care, the odds of having an AACD accredited dentist are pretty rare. There are only about 420 AACD members worldwide, and even fewer of these dentists are fellows. Our dentist was the first AACD accredited member in Costa Rica and is only one of a handful serving patients in Central America.
What Other Accreditations Or Memberships Should a Cosmetic Dentist Have?
Other accreditations and memberships that you should look for when you choose a cosmetic dentist include:
Membership or accreditation in the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.
Some sort of postgraduate training (our dentist got his at UCLA.
Membership in the country’s board of dentistry where you will be receiving your cosmetic dentistry.
Checking to make sure that your dentist has the best credentials will ensure the best cosmetic dentistry experience.
Is Dental Tourism Safe?
If you go to Cancun or Costa Rica for your cosmetic dentistry experience, you will be sure to have the best standard of care possible. Our dentist was the first to receive AACD accreditation in Costa Rica. Outside of the United States, there are only a handful of AACD accredited dentists. Choose The Dental Concierge and you will have a safe, high-quality experience that exceeds the highest standard of care.
