Many thanks to Lynn Beggs for painting "Ida - Angel of the Moon" for the . This painting is a personal experience in Austin for Lynn.

Lynn has advanced Parkinson's and was in a nursing home for 3 years. She disliked the treatment she was receiving there and finally decided to leave despite her medical condition. After spending some time in a medical sanctuary, she moved to a neighborhood in North Austin. Lynn loved her neighborhood with its multicultural community, beautiful oak tree, Roger the loud rooster, Bombi the deer, and snails that left behind their shimmering shells in her yard. Finally the angel statue symbolizes purity, beauty, wisdom of the heart, and the power of feminine energy. She has fond memories of her old neighborhood, all represented in her painting. While she is still getting treatment for her Parkinson's, her passion for her art that keep her alive and close to God.

Lynn has lived in Austin for 35 years and was an artist in residence at the before she became ill. Her art is inspired by the beauty of the world around her and wants to paint everything - trees, flowers, people, landscapes, everything. She is inspired by great painters of the Renaissance as well as turn of the century Modernists. She currently has a few commissions lined up. If you would like to support her and her passion or purchase some of her older paintings, please reach out to our office.

Celebrating Dental Assistant Week (a week late like most of my posts) with Hannah, Ivy, and Norma!

Hannah works primarily at our front desk but also helps with surgeries. She has excellent communication skills and helps me keep on task. As I wheel our sedated patients to their car, they always have great things to say about her. Outside of work, Hannah enjoys spending time with her family, dogs, baking, and painting murals. Don’t be surprised if you see one her murals around Austin in the near future.

Ivy joined us last summer. She shadowed at our office last year but showed a strong interest in dentistry and desire to help around the office - she did such a good job, that I hired her on the spot. Ivy’s hard work and intelligence have paid off - she will be attending dental school next year. We’ll miss having her around.

Last, but not least is Norma. I had the privilege of working with Norma at a previous dental office. She had recently finished dental assisting school at that time but quickly has become skilled in assisting with our surgeries and sedations. Norma has been with the office since we opened a little over three years ago and helps in too many ways to count. Outside of work she is busy with her family and farm animals.

There are many stressful things about running an office, fortunately the assistants at South Austin Oral Surgery are not one of them. This group is great with communicating with each other, with me, and our patients. They are trustworthy, respectful, and good people you want to surround yourself with. I’m fortunate to work with them.

Martha Gannon's wonderful painting of the is a beautiful addition to our . Her painting captures the iconic Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bat Bridge at sunset, with a plume of Mexican free-tailed bats flying out from beneath it. Our colony of 1.5 million bats is the largest urban bat colony in the world!

Martha splits her studio time between Austin and Marfa. She specializes in sculpture and paintings with her work exhibited throughout the world including the Kimber Hotel in Austin and Field Museum in Chicago. She's not on IG, but if you want to check out her work or contact her, she can be reached through her website marthagannon.com.

If you feel like you have seen Martha's work in our office, she also painted Tippy and my three roosters against the backdrop of the Guadalupe mountains.

Shakti Sarkin dropped off her lovely painting to the last month!

I met Shakti at the first in 2023. She saw that I was biking around town and gave me a biscotto and sparkling water before giving me a curated tour of her . Her home is full of , , and made of tree bark that she finds on her walks. From her love of and , it was obvious to ask her to paint one of Austin's great oaks and put her abstract spin on it.

Besides seeing Shakti's art at the yearly Austin Art Tour and Art04 Studio Tour, she has had work displayed at the People's Gallery at City Hall, exhibits in local museums, and at restaurants throughout Austin. Between her frequent exhibits, she is busy with her commissions and can be contacted through Instagram, Facebook (Shakti Sarkin Art) or her website - shaktisarkin.com.

If you want to see a more detailed timeline of Shakti's process of painting the Treaty Oak, make sure to checkout her page. My favorite part of her post is the compliment!

This month we got to celebrate our BBQ lunch with Dr. Suman Kondragunta and his staff at NextGen Dental. Dr. K has a background in public health, treating underserved communities in New Mexico before moving to Austin. He enjoys all aspects of general dentistry as well as Invisalign at his office. His staff also let me know he does a good amount of barbecuing himself. Unfortunately he doesn't eat a lot of brisket, but he enjoyed the smoked chicken we brought for him.

On a side note, before Dr. K opened NextGen Dental, it was called Parkside Dental Specialty - an office that I had worked at for 5 years before opening South Austin Oral Surgery. We had great staff and doctors that I enjoyed working with before the untimely passing of the owner and friend, Dr. Michael Pallante. Dr. K has done a wonderful job transforming the office and we look forward to continue working with him.
