Nancy never did anything halfway.

She raised three kids while building a career in nonprofit leadership. She hosted the holidays, baked the pies and made the photo books. When her mother got sick, she took the late-night calls and coordinated the care. When her youngest needed help buying their first home, she helped and supported without hesitation.

When Nancy’s smile started to fade – first with discoloration then the loss of one tooth, then another – she did what many do. She put herself last. A lifetime of prioritizing others had taken a toll, including on her dental health. But by her late 50s, she decided to do something for herself. She had earned it.

Menopause is often talked about as if it’s only a loss; in fact, Oprah Winfrey described it as women’s bodies betraying themselves. But as Whoopi Goldberg reminds us in her recent book The Change, this season of life offers much for which to be grateful. She frames menopause as a freedom rather than an ending. She suggests it’s a time of wisdom, self-assurance and a deeper connection to the true self – that it is in fact a hero’s journey. Perhaps menopause is a natural transition that brings its own gifts. One important, yet often overlooked, part of this change is how it affects our dental health – an area where awareness and gratitude can go hand in hand.

According to AARP: The Magazine’s article Hold on to Your Smile by Jessica Migala, “Dental care is expensive, and for many of us, it’s a luxury.” The article points out that only about three in ten adults over 65 have dental insurance, based on CDC data. And in most cases, Medicare does not cover basic dental services like cleanings, fillings, extractions or dentures.
