Well... we tried to get all the Christmas cards mailed before Christmas... but we didn't. There is a large stack sitting at the post office now and another to take this afternoon. So Sorry!
You will get one soon - we promise!
If you don't get a card from us, it's not cause we don't like you, and it's not cause we don't want to know you... It's likely we either don't have your address, or that for whatever reason your address isn't on the print list for labels in our Contacts. We usually correct that if we get one from someone that isn't on the list. But if y'all aren't sending cards either - then I suppose it's no great loss you didn't receive one from us.
I also have to apologize, I had to write out a number of cards this year because Deb has her hands full with her mom. Deb's handwriting is beautiful, while mine is hardly legible. For your help and edification it's supposed to say...

For the lab guys who snicker about the ironies we face - this meme really doesn’t fit lab work that well. It’s too obvious!

The problem with cheap lab work is what you don’t see.

Things like improperly mixed “grout” won’t show up for years. Not placing an adequate footing will only manifest over time. Not having adequate structure support, will cause the best looking wall to fail every time, in time.

That’s what you have when the cheap lab cuts corners, doesn’t follow instructions to the letter, uses the cheapest materials available, and ignores design requirements. None of that can be seen, all the good doctor has to go by is whether the glaze is pretty and the fit is close.

There is so much more involved in making great restorations than the superficial appearance of the final product. But those of us who know this are going away rather rapidly. Catch us if you can!

Here we go again, a single central crown, this time on a Strauman implant. The patient presented with severe trauma to the anterior region, implant placed, then recovered.
There are spots of bonding left from retainers which were used to reconstruct the patient’s natural arch. This restoration is a custom milled zirconia abutment with a zirconia cement retained crown. As is usual with milling services these days, there were significant changes needed for the core crown shapes, as they pick from a library and push a button. This core came out full contour, and I needed some cutback for the overlay porcelain. Once that was completed correctly, I was ready to start layering ceramic.

Custom shade is a B1 with incisal calcifications. A fairly easy shade as long as you pay attention to detail and place the porcelain powders appropriately.

Our goal is to place this crown and watch it disappear as if it grew there.

I’m glad this is an easy one!
The patient is concerned about esthetics and the dr is more than concerned as well.

The ADA recommends dentists are to reduce their treatment plans to emergency only. No elective treatments for the next three weeks.

This will put a huge strain on the laboratories that service and rely upon the steady income generated by normal day to day operations of dental practices. Lab employees will be the first to suffer, as they will likely be laid off until work picks back up. Most lab technicians traditionally cannot afford to be out of work for three weeks unpaid.

The positive side is, when this is all over, there will be a backlog of work to do. The problem is, will there be anybody left in the lab profession to do the work. The trend of lab closings has continued for several years. This may well strike the death knell for the dental lab profession.

Its a pretty picture of the virus though - that's how killers are so successful. They rarely look like Jason.

If your lab is having trouble getting your work back on time, there may be a reason. Many labs aren’t telling you they are sending your work to China. I have seen it first hand while in a large lab just this last summer.

Right now, nothing is coming in and nothing is allowed out of China and many of the Chinese technicians are either in quarantine or not allowed to return to work.

Now consider that lab I mentioned... the owner told me he didn’t think there was anyone in his employ, that can wax, cast or solder a pfm crown.

Berry Dental still makes all our restorations right here in Georgia, by people with decades of experience. We can count on one hand ALL of the cases that needed more time, in the 33 years we’ve been serving the dental community. Unlike that big lab up north, our remake percentage is around 1%! (Nowhere close to their admitted 8%... or what looked to me more like 25 to 30% while I was there)

A day in the life of a technician. The slightly larger gingival on the left central was due to a tissue defect that had to be filled. No desire to fill it with tissue colored porcelain, so since they didn’t believe it was necessary, and the low lip line in full smile, we could still give the patient a nice smile.
