The Test. While opening your jaw slightly, place a finger over the joint in front of your ear, and then open wide until you can feel the joint move. If you feel the joint click or if it's tender when you press gently, you may have temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.

Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorders may include:
Pain or tenderness of your jaw.
Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints.
Aching pain in and around your ear.
Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing.
Aching facial pain.
Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth.

We are leaving summer activities behind as we welcome fall, and with that comes Halloween. Just because you have TMJ disorder doesn’t make you are any less addicted to sugar. Halloween is the most accepted time to indulge in candy and sweet treats, but there are certain candies you should avoid if you have TMJ disorder. Dr.Allman and Dr.Jones would like you to know what to avoid this Halloween to protect your jaw joints. Don’t worry, there still will be plenty of sweet treats you can enjoy this Halloween.

HALLOWEEN CANDY THAT IRRITATES TMJ
Caramel: This chewy goodness is hard to resist, especially when it covers a juicy, crunchy apple. But, because caramel is chewy, it can irritate a jaw that is already affected by TMJ. Likewise, chewy candies such as Tootsie Rolls, Laffy Taffy, and other similar types of candy should also be avoided if you suffer from pain in the jaw joints or TMJ disorder.

Gum: Even if you chew sugar-free gum, it still can irritate the jaw joints, whether or not you have TMJ. If you have TMJ already, however, chewing gum will only exacerbate your discomfort as it causes the jaw joint muscles to become stressed and strained.

Hard Candy: You might think hard candy is a safe bet since you aren’t chewing on it, but, it’s actually not a good idea for those with TMJ disorder in Los Gatos. Even when you hold a larger piece of hard candy in your mouth and suck on it, it causes the mouth to rest in an unnatural position. Also, if you bite and crunch on the candy, you are causing even more stress to an already sore jaw. The same is true for crunchy candies such as Smarties as well. Any candy that causes you to clamp down hard and chew should be avoided.

HALLOWEEN TREATS TO ENJOY
We have a list of treats that you can enjoy this Halloween in Atlanta, You didn’t think we were going to take all of the fun out of the holiday, did you?

Dark Chocolate: Quality dark chocolate not only has added health benefits because of its naturally occurring antioxidants, but it also melts in your mouth and does not cause stress or strain on the jaw.

Apple Cider: How about sipping on some warm apple cider to curb your sweet tooth? Drinking cider certainly causes no harm or irritation to the jaw. Just be sure that you rinse out your mouth afterward or brush your teeth to remove residual sugar.

Marshmallows: Enjoy this treat after roasting one over an open fire. They aren’t too chewy, and practically melt in your mouth!

Nut Butters: Peanut butter or other nut butter treats are easy to chew and even provide a bit of nutrition because of the added protein. Pair dark chocolate with almond butter for an even healthier alternative to a sweet treat.

Pumpkin: Pumpkin can be a flavorful ingredient to bread, cookies, or pie. Since pumpkin is smooth and easy to eat, it won’t stress the jaw. Pumpkin even can be added to smoothies!

At TMJ Treatment Atlanta, the initial consultation consists of an hour with each patient. The doctor spends a good deal of time listening to the patient in order to obtain a thorough history of the problem. He will examine the patient’s head and neck, recording their sensitivity level to jaw pain and facial pain. The doctor will listen to the patient’s TMJ’s on opening and closing to evaluate a popping jaw, measure range of motion and test the muscles in the head and neck for sensitivity. The doctor will also check the patient’s neck for tenderness and possible problems. He will thoroughly explain to the patient how the TMJ works, how it can be damaged and the ramifications of such damage. Depending on the symptoms of the patient, the doctor quite often will recommend a week of TMD treatment to determine the major source of their problem. If the patient is suffering from facial pain or jaw pain, this week of treatment will hopefully be a week of therapy as well. If the pain is mostly muscle in origin, this week will usually decrease symptoms for the patient.

The doctor treats his patients in the most conservative possible way that will help them to become pain free and functioning. TMJ Treatment Atlanta’s goal is to help the patient figure out exactly what is wrong and to render to them a correct diagnosis. It takes time to do that. It will also take commitment on the patient’s part, as well as a desire to get better in order to achieve a more comfortable balance with their head and neck.

What is TMJ or the Temporomandibular Joint?
ONE OF THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS THIS PRACTICE SEES WITH NEW PATIENTS IS THAT THEY HAVE BEEN TOLD THEY HAVE “TMJ.” WHAT IS TMJ?
What is TMJ? Temporomandibular Joint with TMJ Treatment Atlanta
This term has become the catch acronym of any undiagnosed problem of facial pain, jaw pain or popping jaw. Fortunately, the TMJ is not a disease process, but an anatomical part of the body. Patients have been led to believe; however, that the source of their problem is the joint. In truth, health care professionals, for the most part, who tell their patients they have “TMJ” are really telling their patients that they do not know what the problem is.

What is TMJ? TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint. These are the two jaw joints that function in opening, closing, talking and chewing. These functions are very specialized and when trauma is inflicted on the joint(s) the damage can be severe. TMD stands for Temporomandibular Disorder. The doctors at TMJ Treatment Atlanta use this term to describe the pain that patients experience in the head and neck, because until they have a diagnosis they do not know if the source of the pain is truly the joint(s) or something else. The doctors tend to refer to management of this problem as TMJ treatment or TMD treatment. TMJ treatment refers to specific management of a popping jaw and TMD management usually refers to management of facial pain, jaw pain and neck pain. Other sources of pain in the head and neck can be from nerve pain, cervical neck degeneration or pain from a neoplasm. The pain experienced can be an achy, throbbing, sharp, stabbing, crushing or burning pain. Pain type and intensity quite often helps to narrow the suspected sources of the pain.

There are usually multiple factors that go into the pain patterns of most patients. This practice’s goal is to help our patients figure out what are the sources of the problem and to do the best to give them relief if pain is the overriding problem the patient is facing. If the pain is not within the scope of the doctors ability to treat, they will be able to refer the patient to a practitioner who can treat their problem.
