The airway is about more than simply breathing comfortably during the day. When the airway becomes restricted during sleep, it can contribute to sleep-disordered breathing and repeated drops in oxygen levels. Large population studies have found an association between sleep apnea and an increased risk of cognitive decline, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.

This is why you may hear your hygienist or Dr. Nelms discussing airway health, sleep, breathing, and myofunctional therapy during your upcoming visits. Myofunctional therapy is one approach that can help improve the strength, coordination, and function of the muscles that support the airway.

Our goal is not to suggest that airway therapy prevents dementia, but rather to identify potential airway concerns earlier and work upstream to support healthy breathing, sleep quality, oxygenation, and overall health. That’s why we’re taking a closer look at airway function, not just teeth. 🦷 👃

Dr. Nelms recently returned from the Pankey Institute after completing Essentials 2, an advanced continuing education course focused on occlusion, splint therapy, and the diagnosis and management of temporomandibular disorders (TMD).

At Five Points Family Dental, Dr. Nelms believes that exceptional patient care begins with a commitment to lifelong learning. By investing in advanced education, she continues to refine her approach to diagnosing complex bite issues, managing jaw pain, and creating individualized treatment plans that prioritize long-term oral health and comfort.

We’re excited to bring this knowledge home to our patients and continue providing comprehensive, evidence-based care with the heart that defines Five Points Family Dental.
