1. Crackers: Kids love carbs, but cracker snacks are a horrible choice for your child’s oral health. Graham crackers, goldfish crackers, and other types of crackers all turn into sugar once they’re on your child’s teeth, which means they increase the risk of cavities as much as eating candy does.

2. Goldfish: We give them their very own bullet point because they are so common and so incredibly bad for your child’s teeth.

3. Fruit Snacks and Gummies: These seemingly innocent treats often contain high amounts of added sugars and sticky substances that cling to teeth. Prolonged exposure to sugar can contribute to tooth decay and cavities.

4. Sugary Drinks: Soda, fruit juices, sport drinks. Although fruit juices may seem like a healthy choice that’s better than sodas, it often contains at least as much sugar as sodas do. Fruit juices lose a lot of their nutritional value when they are extracted, and you’re left with a lot of sugar. If kids are drinking juices out of sippy cups, sugar can just sit on teeth, allowing bacteria to grow that can cause tooth decay and cavities.

5. Bars: The ingredients which “stick” the bars together are also great at sticking the bars to your teeth. Even those that have limited ingredients (like dates) and are marketed as being more healthy can still have the unintended effect of being harmful to your child’s teeth because they are sticky and loaded with sugar.

Meet Our Dentist, Dr. Joel S. Butterworth🦷

Dr. Joel Butterworth, son of Fredericksburg Smile Center founder Dr. Cathie Hidalgo, is a native of the area. Dr. Butterworth grew up in Bowling Green and Fredericksburg where he graduated from Fredericksburg Academy. Dr. Butterworth attended The College of Charleston and graduated with a B.S. in Biology and received minors in Political Science and Spanish. He received his D.D.S from Howard University College of Dentistry in 2015. Upon graduation, Dr. Butterworth completed a General Practice Residency at the Portland VA Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. Working with veterans, he has extensive training in hospital dentistry and clinical experience with medically compromised patients. In addition to advanced work in all fields of dentistry, Dr. Butterworth’s training includes advanced anesthesia and pain control, TMJ disorders, dental oncology and emergency medicine. Dr. Butterworth enjoys spending time with his family, hunting, golfing, gardening, cooking, traveling, and tending to his homestead.

Brooke has been in the dental field for 18 years and a hygienist for 14. She joined our team 8 years ago. Brooke is a mom of two boys, loves to host parties, and is thankful to have a husband who helps her engineer her intricate designs and ideas during the holidays! Brooke’s favorite thing to make is soup, but is most famous for her lasagna. She rarely follows a recipe and loves to add her own personal touch to each dish. If she had to pick one thing she likes most about being a hygienist, it is being an advocate for her patients, being part of their lives, and creating a connection.
