Most people think of a missing tooth as a gap. What concerns us is what happens below the gum line.
The bone in your jaw stays thick because a tooth root presses into it every time you chew. Remove the root and that stimulus disappears, so the ridge begins to narrow. Studies of healing extraction sites find a substantial share of that width, commonly put at around a quarter, goes in the first year alone.
That is the reason we bring up replacement sooner rather than someday. A dental implant restores the root, not just the tooth, so the bone keeps its job.
