So…why would a baby need an appliance?

Because sometimes the concern isn’t the teeth—it’s function.

A baby’s tongue, jaw, palate, and airway are closely connected. During feeding, the infant must coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing, while the tongue and other oral structures are actively involved in this process.

When an infant has certain structural or functional challenges, their oral patterns may not be developing as efficiently as they could. In some babies, these challenges can also be associated with feeding difficulties or airway obstruction, particularly when craniofacial differences are present.

This is where a Neonatal ALF may become part of the conversation.

It is a small, lightweight, function-focused appliance designed for carefully selected infants. Rather than thinking of it as “braces for a baby,” think of it as a tool that may help support more functional oral patterns during an important window of development.

The goal is to work with the baby’s developing system—not simply force structures into a new position.

And importantly, this is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. A qualified provider should first evaluate the baby’s oral function, feeding patterns, airway, craniofacial development, and overall needs before determining whether an appliance is appropriate.

Because when we look at babies, we don’t just look at the mouth.

We look at the whole system. 💛

“No one could ever answer why all this was happening.”

That sentence captures what so many parents experience when their child has symptoms that seem unrelated.

This mom did what many parents do—she researched doctors, sought different opinions, explored allergy treatments, and kept going back to ask, “Is there something else we could do?”

But her research kept pointing toward allergies.

The missing question was breathing.

Her story is a reminder that persistent questions matter. When symptoms span different areas of a child’s health, looking at the whole picture may reveal connections that individual appointments can miss.

You know your child best. If something doesn’t add up, keep asking questions.

A healthy smile is important—but it’s only one part of your child’s overall development. 💙

At Ashburn Children’s Dentistry & Womb 2 Grow Wellness, we look at the bigger picture because breathing, sleep, oral function, and development can all provide important clues about how a child is growing.

🫁 Breathing: Is your child consistently mouth breathing or having noisy breathing?
😴 Sleep: Are they snoring, restless, or waking frequently?
👅 Oral function: How are the tongue, lips, jaw, and other oral structures working together?
🌱 Development: How are their oral structures, facial features, and habits changing as they grow?
Looking at these areas doesn’t mean that every symptom points to a problem. Instead, it helps us recognize patterns and determine when a child may benefit from a closer look or collaboration with other healthcare professionals.

Because sometimes, the mouth can be an important window into the bigger picture.

If you have concerns about your child’s oral health, breathing, sleep, or development, schedule a consultation with our team.

What does elite soccer player Erling Haaland have to do with your child’s breathing? ⚽️👃

During our recent Living Local DMV interview, Dr. Krystle and Dr. Lynda shared that Haaland has talked publicly about prioritizing sleep and using mouth taping to encourage nasal breathing.

But the bigger conversation is why nasal breathing matters.

Breathing through the nose can support efficient oxygen delivery and is an important part of healthy breathing patterns. At Ashburn Children’s Dentistry and Womb 2 Grow Wellness, our goal is to help establish healthy airway and breathing patterns as early as possible—so children don’t have to rely on “performance hacks” later in life.

For kids, mouth breathing shouldn’t simply be covered up. It’s worth understanding why it’s happening in the first place.

By the time mouth breathing becomes obvious, the habit may already be well established.

That’s why we focus on early awareness and early support.

For infants around 6 months and older, the Myo Munchee Bebé® can help encourage lip seal awareness, oral exploration, and healthy oral muscle coordination—important building blocks that support nasal breathing and normal facial development.

Every child is different, which is why the best results come from an individualized evaluation and a comprehensive approach to airway health—not from one tool alone.

Because healthy growth starts sooner than most parents think. 💙

If I could share a few things with every new parent about their baby’s oral health, breathing, and development, these would be at the top of my list. 💙

🦷 1. Baby teeth matter.
Even though they’re temporary, baby teeth help with eating, speech, maintaining space for permanent teeth, and establishing healthy oral habits.
👃 2. Pay attention to how your baby breathes.
Persistent mouth breathing or consistently noisy breathing is worth discussing with your child’s healthcare provider.
🍼 3. Feeding can provide important clues.
Frequent clicking, coughing, leaking milk, difficulty latching, or consistently prolonged feeds may be worth bringing up with your baby’s healthcare team.
😴 4. Sleep is part of the picture.
Persistent snoring, noisy breathing, frequent waking, or restless sleep shouldn’t automatically be dismissed as “just how they sleep.”
👅 5. Oral function matters—not just the appearance of the teeth.
The tongue, lips, jaw, and other oral structures work together during feeding, swallowing, breathing, and development.
🌱 6. Development starts before the first permanent tooth appears.
Early oral habits, breathing patterns, feeding, and facial growth are all worth paying attention to as your baby grows.

And perhaps most importantly:
You don’t need to figure everything out on your own.
If something doesn’t seem right, ask questions. Your observations as a parent are valuable, and early conversations can help you understand whether further evaluation is appropriate.

Save this as your baby grows and share it with a new parent who may find it helpful. If you have questions about your child’s oral health, breathing, or development, we’re here to help.
