WHY ORAL CANCER EXAMS MATTER:

More than 25% of oral cancer victims are under age 40 and have none of the known lifestyle risk factors like to***co and alcohol use or diabetes.

Scientists have recently learned that people can develop oral cancer after contracting the human papilloma virus (HPV). Most types of HPV are harmless -- for example, skin warts which are very common. But some types, like those transmitted sexually, have been linked to oral cancer.

If oral cancer is caught early, the 5-year survival rate can be as high as 90%. If not, the rate drops significantly. Sore Mouth, Bleeding Gums May Be Symptoms Of Stress.

In its list of 10 symptoms of overstress, Prevention Magazine (4/22) reports that a sore mouth or jaw, and bleeding gums may be two such symptoms. “A sore jaw can be a sign of teeth grinding, which usually occurs during sleep and can be worsened by stress, says Matthew Messina, DDS, a consumer advisor to the American Dental Association,” Prevention Magazine reports. Meanwhile, “stressed-out people have a higher risk of periodontal disease,” according to a Brazilian meta-analysis. Past president of the American Academy of Periodontology Dr. Preston Miller says to “protect your mouth by exercising and sleeping more, which will help lower stress.”
