Not every spot on a tooth needs a filling.

Early changes in the enamel can stop right where they are with fluoride, a little extra care brushing that area, and less sipping on sugary or acidic drinks, so we check the spot at each visit and fill it only if it grows, breaks through, or starts to hurt.

Every filling eventually needs replacing, and each replacement takes a little more of your own tooth, which is why we would rather keep an eye on a small spot than drill it too early.

A lot of cracks are too fine to show up on an X-ray, so we test the tooth itself.

And because most teeth have a crack somewhere if you look closely enough, we look at the rest of your mouth before recommending anything.

Some cracks need a crown, and plenty can be left alone and watched.

Two minutes at the sink somehow feels a lot longer than two minutes on your phone

Every slide takes a stretch of time you already give away without thinking and puts it next to the same stretch spent on your teeth.

Custom mouthguards, and why fit is the part that should matter to you the most.

A mouthguard works by spreading force across the whole arch, which is why a stock guard is a weak substitute.

Those come pre-formed in three sizes, and the ADA says that they „often don’t fit very well.” Their guidance is short: the best mouthguard is one made for your mouth by your dentist.

The clearest evidence comes from football.

Once mouthguards and facemasks were required, dental and facial injuries dropped from about half of all football injuries to under two percent.

Non-contact sports count too, since a fall in gymnastics or on skates does the same damage as a hit.

The same goes for grinding at night. A fitted guard protects enamel and the crowns you already have, and a boil-and-bite from the drugstore doesn’t know where your bite should be.

Getting one made starts with a digital scan, so there’s no tray of goop to sit through. Ask at your next cleaning or give us a call.

Happy Labor Day from all of us at Distinctive Dentistry on Maitland.

This is the team that opens the doors at 7 AM on Maitland Avenue, and a lot of these faces have been greeting the same families for fifteen, twenty, thirty years. Some of the people they greet have been coming since they were kids and now bring their own kids, which is a big part of why this still feels like a neighborhood practice and not a chain.

And then there’s everyone else who makes Altamonte Springs, Winter Park, Maitland and Longwood work: the teachers, the nurses, the contractors, the folks driving trucks at 5 AM and the ones closing restaurants at midnight. A lot of you sit in our chairs, and we hear about your jobs every single day. Thank you for the work. It doesn’t go unnoticed.

Today, rest. We’ll see you this week, and we’re proud to be your neighbors.

New to Distinctive Dentistry on Maitland? Start here.

We’re a four-dentist family practice in Altamonte Springs, in the same building on Maitland Avenue for fifty years.

Drs. Lane, Curley, Zak and McCauley all practice here full time, and the voice that answers our phone has been answering it for thirty years. Families come to us from Altamonte Springs, Winter Park, Maitland, Longwood and across greater Orlando, and several of them now span four generations.

Your first visit takes about 90 minutes. We take X-rays and photos, one of our dentists examines your teeth, gums and jaw and screens for oral cancer, and then we sit down and talk through what we found. If you don’t need something, we won’t recommend it. It’s the dentistry we’d want for our own families.

A few things you’ll notice.

There’s a dental lab inside our building, so crowns and veneers get shade matched next to your actual tooth instead of mailed to another state.

We see kids from around age three, and you’re welcome to bring little ones along to a sibling’s appointment so the office already feels familiar.

And we open at 7 AM Monday through Thursday, so you can come in and still make it to work or school.

Insurance: we file your claims for you. Call with your plan details and we’ll walk you through real numbers.

CareCredit is available for larger treatments.
