Biological dentistry isn't a trend — it's a return to first principles.

Treat the whole person. Use materials the body can accept. Address root causes. Minimize intervention when possible. At PJN Dental in Beaverton, Oregon, that's been the philosophy from day one.

If you're ready for a dentist who thinks this way, we're accepting new patients.

Not all composites are created equal — and biocompatibility testing proves it.

Different patients react differently to different materials. Metal sensitivity, resin monomer reactivity, and ceramic composition all vary. Biological dentistry uses biocompatibility testing to match restorative materials to each patient's immune profile — rather than defaulting to whatever's on the shelf.

Your body's response to what we put in it matters.

A tongue tie isn't just a speech problem.

Restricted lingual frenulum affects nasal breathing, swallowing pattern, jaw development, sleep quality, and posture. When the tongue can't rest properly on the palate, the airway narrows and the face develops differently. Frenectomy alone isn't enough — myofunctional therapy before and after is what makes the results last.

This is one of the most impactful interventions in early biological dentistry.

The fluoride debate deserves more nuance than "pro" or "anti."

Topical fluoride at the tooth surface has evidence for decay prevention. Systemic fluoridation — adding it to drinking water for ingestion — is a different question, particularly for thyroid function, neurological development, and dental fluorosis in children. Hydroxyapatite has matched or outperformed fluoride in multiple studies, without the systemic concerns.

Biological dentistry defaults to the option with the better safety profile.

Not all root canals are created equal — and not all teeth need one.

When a root canal is necessary, biological dentistry focuses on thorough sterilization using ozone, biocompatible sealer materials, and complete informed consent about alternatives including extraction with implant or bridge. The goal is preserving teeth where possible and making the best decision for whole-body health when it's not.

The link between gum disease and heart disease is not a coincidence.

Periodontal bacteria — particularly P. gingivalis — have been found in atherosclerotic plaques. Chronic oral inflammation drives systemic inflammation, elevates CRP, and contributes to endothelial dysfunction. Treating periodontal disease is cardiovascular care.

This is the oral-systemic connection in practice.

Cavitations are one of the most underdiagnosed conditions in dentistry.

These areas of ischemic, poorly-healed bone — often at old extraction sites — don't always show up on standard 2D X-rays. Cone beam CT and thermography reveal what's hidden. Left untreated, they can be a chronic source of inflammation and systemic symptoms.

Biological dentistry looks beyond what conventional imaging misses.

Oregon's only DMD + NMD biological dentist.

At PJN Dental in Beaverton, we treat oral health as inseparable from whole-body health. Mercury-free restorations. Ozone therapy. Airway screening. Nutritional guidance. A practice built around your biology — not a checklist.

If you've been looking for a dentist who asks "why" before reaching for the drill, we'd love to meet you.

Over 700 bacterial species live in your mouth — most of them essential.

The oral microbiome regulates inflammation, protects against pathogens, and even produces nitric oxide that supports cardiovascular health. Antibacterial mouthwash, chlorinated water, and processed food diets disrupt this ecosystem. Dysbiosis leads to decay, gum disease, and systemic inflammation.

Restore balance: probiotics, mineral-rich diet, nasal breathing, and avoiding broad-spectrum antimicrobials when possible.

Weston A. Price spent years studying traditional cultures with virtually no tooth decay — and the answer wasn't better toothbrushes.

It was fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and K2, along with mineral-dense whole foods. Sugar feeds cavity-causing bacteria, but mineral deficiency is what makes enamel vulnerable in the first place. Remineralization requires the raw materials to actually work.

Biological dentistry addresses the root — not just the symptom.
