I was reading the ADA journal and found an interesting case about charcoal toothpaste causing gray gingival staining. The charcoal embeds into the connective tissue causing the gums to appear gray. There are no benefits to charcoal toothpaste and now we see there are definite cons. Just use a toothpaste that has silica and/or baking soda for the abrasive action.

A 15-year-old White female patient sought treatment from her general dentist, reporting a 2-month history of asymptomatic dark spots on her mandibular left gingiva. Her general dentist referred her to a periodontist for evaluation. The patient was a never-smoker with an unremarkable medical history....
