Tomorrow is Halloween which for most children means lots of free candy. No surprise, Halloween can also present parents with a variety of health and safety challenges. It’s OK to eat that candy on Halloween but it’s important to keep a few things in mind.
Sticky candies, like taffy and gummy bears, take longer to get washed away by saliva, increasing the risk for tooth decay. If you can avoid those, great and if not, try to keep those down to a minimum when checking the safety of the candy your children have received.
It's even more important that your kids brush their teeth and floss over the next few days as they raid their candy stashes. Have a safe Halloween!

New Study Links Serious Gum Disease to Dementia Decades Later

New research is the latest to suggest that the condition of our mouth and teeth is intimately connected to our brain health. The study found an association between people having severe gum disease or missing teeth in their early 60’s and an increased risk of them developing cognitive problems and dementia up to two decades later, compared to people with no gum disease.

The new study, published Wednesday in Neurology, looked at the medical history of over 8,000 middle-aged people who were taking part in another long-term research project meant to track their health over the rest of their lifetime. As part of the project, these volunteers underwent a full dental exam in their 60s (average age 63). At the time of this exam, none of them were considered to have dementia or mild cognitive impairment, a condition that often leads to full-blown dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Hello Everyone!!

Hoping you've all been safe and healthy through these unprecedented times. We are excited to welcome back everyone's smiles 😀 on Monday, June 1st.
As you return you can feel confident that we have made several changes while following the recommendations of the CDC, State of Illinois, and the American Dental Association.

You will begin by us checking your temperature with a lasar touchless thermometer and completing a required Covid 19 health form. We have installed new partitions at the front desk to further protect both you and our staff. New PPE wear will be worn, as well as upgrading our air filtration system to Medical Grade HEPPA air filters.

In short, I am completely committed to protecting you and my staff as if you were my own family because "we are truly in this together" in these trying times.

Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to call the office or ask the girls as they confirm your appointment and review a short health update while on the phone.

Please give the office a call to schedule a cleaning or for Dr. Duncan to address any concerns that may have arisen over this time away.

See You Soon!

COVID 19 UPDATE

Hello Everyone. I wanted to touch base with you regarding the current status of our office hours in the midst of the recent Coronavirus outbreak. These are unprecedented times and we all must remain Calm, Educated, and Supportive. The Governor, as well as the American Dental Association and the Illinois State Dental Society, have recommended to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus we close our offices from March 16 -- March 31st. I have chosen to comply with this for the safety of all my patients, my staff and delivery personal and the community. I will still be available for dental emergencies and can be reached via my personal cell phone at 815-451-2142. Rest assured that as per our normal daily maintance of our office we go above and beyond all sterilaztion procedures.
Thank you all for your understanding and continued support .
Stay home and stay healthy.

The Consumer Electronics Show has been the launch pad of another new product for dentistry. This time it's a new toothbrush that can brush your teeth in 10 seconds!

The Y-Brush resembles a sports mouthguard packed with nylon bristles. The motor inside the small trapezoid-shaped handle vibrates to clean all your teeth at once on the top or bottom of your mouth.

It goes for $125 and won't ship until March but if you're so inclined, here is the link to buy it and I think I will have to try it to see if it can live up to all the hype. https://www.us.y-brush.com/shop/y-brush-single-package If any of my patients are trying these new toothbrushes coming out of the CEWS this year, please send me some feedback.

Five Dental Systems and What They Mean.

I'll post one every week or so to share some information about your health and hope to educate you on what different symptoms might mean.

TOOTHACHE

When you have a toothache, it can have several different causes and not all of them are all that obvious.So9me pain can disturb your sleeping patterns or even affect your concentration. Here are the different types of pain from a tooth.

Sharp pain. If you bite into an apple and suddenly feel sharp pain, you may have tooth decay, a loose filling, or even a crack in your tooth. These could cause tissue damage inside your tooth.

Constant, severe pain. If you experience severe pain along with swelling in your gums, you may have an abscessed tooth that has caused an infection in the bone or tissue around the tooth.

Aching pain and pressure in upper teeth. Grinding your teeth or a sinus headache could cause this type of pain.

If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, please give us a call and we'll do our best to get you in as quickly as possible. We know what a "pain" a toothache can be.
