Today, we remember 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. We remember the 2,977 individuals who lost their lives that day, and we pray for the countless others who lost husbands, wives, sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, family members, and friends. We also remember the countless first responders who lost their lives running towards the sound of danger, while others were running away.
In our own community, we cannot thank our first responders enough. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, they stand ready to protect our community and help us in our greatest times of need. They willingly face dangers so that the rest of us can live in a safe and peaceful community. We were reminded of that sacrifice three years ago when we lost one of our own, Officer Kevin Cram, who was killed in the line of duty on September 13, 2023.
To our law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, 911 dispatchers, and all those who keep our community running in difficult circumstances, including linemen, road crews, and other essential workers, we cannot begin to express our gratitude for what you do.
This day is also a reminder that there are heroes all around us.
There are countless stories from that day of ordinary people doing extraordinary things for someone else. Welles Crowther who repeatedly went back up the South Tower to help those in need before it collapsed. The brave men and women on United Flight 93, who stormed the cockpit to prevent additional loss of life once they had discovered what was unfolding elsewhere.
While I pray none of us ever face such circumstances, we see the same spirit of selflessness in our community. For us personally, Len Davis is an example of this. This summer, during our office addition, we received heavy rain overnight. Around 4 a.m., Len realized that because of the construction, our office was vulnerable to water getting into the basement. On his own accord, Len headed to our office with his cleaning equipment to help clean up any water and prevent further damage. Bill will tell you it was a surreal experience to pull into the office around 4:30 that morning and find Len already set up and working in the basement.
Len Davis is one of our heroes.
I’m sure each of us can think of a story about a neighbor, coworker, friend, or even acquaintance who gave of themselves to help someone else in a way that may never be fully repaid.
Lastly, days like these point us to Christ. Despite the horrors of 9/11 and the evils of our fallen world (Matthew 24), Jesus is still on the throne, in complete control of all things. Christ brings purpose and redemption, even in the midst of tragedy (Romans 8:28). Repent and put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ, and you will have a hope that goes beyond the grave.
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.
