Desert Senita Community Health Center

Desert Senita Community Health Center Our medical clinic's mission is to make healthcare accessible and affordable. We care for everyone!

Desert Senita Community Health Center is the sole provider of primary health and dental services in the entire rural, frontier Ajo Primary Care Area, a geographically-isolated area roughly 2/3 the size of the state of Connecticut and surrounded on all sides by federal lands, with a population of approximately 4,000 residents. Desert Senita currently provides services to about 75% of local resident

s, and typically records over 15,000 patient visits a year. The Desert Senita organization has evolved from a hospital and outpatient facility which was run by a large mining company until it ceased local operations in 1986. Following the mine closure, the hospital closed and the outpatient treatment facility relocated to the mine’s former single men’s dormitory, in a more central area of the Ajo community. The health center was then run by hospital management organizations hired by the mining company for a few years, prior to becoming an independently run facility in the late 1990s. Desert Senita has been an independent, outpatient treatment facility since 1997 and became a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in 2001. The health center provides health care for the entire family, including preventative and primary health care services, dental services, behavioral health services, outreach and education programs, and eligibility assistance for AHCCCS and other sliding fee scale and discounted services programs. In January 2010, Desert Senita also added in an in-house pharmacy for our patients’ convenience. In 2017, Desert Senita expanded its services to Arizona City, Arizona. In 2019, Desert Senita completed a multi-phase construction project in Ajo and moved into a brand-new facility in Arizona City in January 2022.

The Curley School in Ajo, built in 1919, is a massive, ornate building that looks more like a palace than a public school. After the mine closed in 1985 and the town’s population dipped, the school sat vacant.

In a clever bit of historical preservation, it was eventually converted into low-income housing for artists. Today, it’s a thriving creative hub, ensuring that the town’s grandest historical structure is still full of life.

A lot of people do not avoid care because they do not care about their health.

They avoid it because money is tight.

Because bills are stacked up.
Because the kids need something first.
Because asking about cost can feel uncomfortable.

And in a lot of homes, people just try to push through and deal with it.

But putting off care can turn small problems into bigger ones, which then add up to unexpected medical debt.

That is why Desert Senita offers the Patient Discount Program (known as the Sliding Fee Discount Program).

This program may help lower the cost of care based on your family size and income.
Here’s what that can mean for you:

✅ A chance to get care sooner instead of waiting
✅ Less stress around the cost of an appointment
✅ Support for your health before things get worse
✅ A care team that will walk you through the process with you
Getting care should not feel out of reach.

At Desert Senita, we believe affordable healthcare is your right and it is our honor to deliver it.

A lot of couples are not fighting because they do not care.
They are tired.
They are stretched thin.

And stress has a way of turning small things into bigger things.

When stress keeps building, it can affect communication, patience, connection, and how people respond to each other at home.

That is why relationship strain is not always just about the relationship itself.

Sometimes it is the pressure.

Work.
Bills.
Kids.
Health.
Life stacking up all at once.
And no, you cannot just wave a wand and make that disappear.

But you can get support.

At Desert Senita, couples therapy can help you and your partner:
✅ Communicate better
✅ Work through tension in a healthier way
✅ Feel heard and understood
✅ Rebuild connection during stressful seasons

In Coolidge and Arizona City, our Behavioral Health Specialist Wyatt, MAS-MFT, LAMFT, offers couples therapy to help support healthier relationships and stronger communication.

Because when stress affects the home, it affects everything around it.

Come to Desert Senita and let our team support you every step of the way.

Chronic and unmanaged stress is not a badge of honor when it affects more than your mood. Here’s why.

Over time, it can affect your sleep, focus, appetite, blood pressure, and even make ongoing health problems harder to manage.

The National Institute of Mental Health also says stress can show up as tension, headaches or body pain, high blood pressure, and loss of sleep.

And this does not just stay personal.

CDC research on stress at work says stress-related problems can show up as mood and sleep problems, headaches, upset stomach, and strained relationships with family and friends.

That matters in real life.

When stress keeps building, it can make it harder to stay patient at home, stay focused at work, and stay on top of your health.

Now, we get it. You cannot magically wave a wand and make stress go away. And for some, this level of stress has become the norm.

This is why Desert Senita has Behavioral Health services that can support you and help decrease the weight of that stress, like:

✅ Better tools to handle stress before it builds up
✅ Support for anxiety, trauma, and life changes
✅ Counseling, therapy, and medication management in one place
✅ Care that supports your mental health and your overall health

At Desert Senita, our Behavioral Health team offers counseling, therapy, and medication management to help you feel better, think clearer, and live healthier.

Two people can start in the same place… and end up in very different situations.

Both were told they had early signs of diabetes.

The 😄 first person, decided to stay consistent with care.

They came in for regular checkups, kept track of their numbers, and made small adjustments over time. Nothing extreme, just steady.

Over the years, their condition stayed manageable.

✅ They avoided major complications
✅ Stayed active
✅Was able to keep up with work and family without major disruptions.

The 😕 second person felt fine and chose to wait.

Appointments were pushed off. Symptoms were easy to ignore. Life stayed busy.
But over time, things began to change.

Blood sugar levels became harder to control. More medications were needed. Energy dropped. Work became harder to manage.

Then came the conversations no one wants to have.

😰 Circulation problems.
😰 Nerve damage.
😰 Wounds that weren’t healing the way they should.

And eventually, discussions about the risk of losing part of their foot or leg if things didn’t improve.

At that point, care becomes more urgent… and more complicated.

And the cost starts to add up.

According to the American Diabetes Association, the average annual medical cost for someone with diabetes is about $19,736, with over $12,000 directly related to diabetes care. 😰

That’s the difference between managing early… and managing later.

One person stayed ahead of their condition. 👍

The other person had to catch up to it. 👎

And that catch-up often costs more than just money, It affects,

Your time.
Your energy.
And your ability to show up for your family.

At Desert Senita, regular checkups are designed to help you stay ahead, so your condition stays manageable and doesn’t take over your life.

Or if you lack time, you can at a minimum come in once per month to our dedicated Diabetes Days we hold 2x a month.

On these days we have 12 dedicated appointment slots at our Ajo and Arizona clinic for a comprehensive check of your diabetes.

Did you know, In the middle of the arid Sonoran Desert sits a geographical anomaly: Paradise Lake.

Built in 1959 to anchor the new Arizona City, this 48-acre man-made oasis was filled entirely by deep underground aquifers. At the time, the water was marketed as the "purest in the state," consistently testing 100% pure by health officials.

Today, it remains one of the largest privately owned lakes in Arizona, a shimmering testament to the massive "hidden" river flowing deep beneath the desert floor.

Cost is one of the biggest reasons people delay care.

And in many cases, it’s not because care isn’t needed.

It’s because people are trying to make everything else fit first.

That’s why Desert Senita offers a Patient Discount Program (known as the Sliding Fee Discount Program)

This program is designed to make care more affordable based on your household size and income.

It applies to:

✅ Medical services
✅ Behavioral Health services
✅ Dental services

And more importantly:

You will not be denied care based on your ability to pay, we'll work out the finances with you.

That is part of our commitment as a Community Health Center.

Because getting care early can help prevent more serious and more costly problems later.

If cost has been a concern, we encourage you to ask about the program and see what you may qualify for.

“Hey, I haven’t seen you in a while, and I’m glad you came in today.”

That’s something our providers may say often, because we know it’s not always easy to stay consistent with care, especially when you’re managing a chronic condition.

Over time, conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure don’t just stay the same.
When they’re not regularly managed, they can begin to affect,

❌ Your energy
❌ Your focus
❌ Your ability to keep up with work and daily responsibilities.

What starts as something manageable can turn into more medications, more appointments, and more time away from the things that matter to you.

For many people, especially in rural communities, this is where it starts to feel overwhelming.

Appointments take time. Travel takes planning. Life doesn’t slow down.

And eventually, it can lead to something called treatment burden.

That’s when managing your health begins to feel like too much to keep up with, not because you don’t care, but because the system around you feels heavy.

At Desert Senita, you don't have to carry that burden along as we make care feel more manageable and consistent.

✅Medical, behavioral health, and dental services are connected
✅Providers share information, so you don’t have to repeat your story
✅Care plans are built around your real day-to-day life
✅Support is available to help you stay on track between visits

The goal is simple.

To make it easier for you to stay consistent with your care, so your condition stays manageable and doesn’t become a burden.
