Desert Senita Community Health Center

Desert Senita Community Health Center Our medical clinic's mission is to make healthcare accessible and affordable. We care for everyone!

Desert Senita Community Health Center is the sole provider of primary health and dental services in the entire rural, frontier Ajo Primary Care Area, a geographically-isolated area roughly 2/3 the size of the state of Connecticut and surrounded on all sides by federal lands, with a population of approximately 4,000 residents. Desert Senita currently provides services to about 75% of local resident

s, and typically records over 15,000 patient visits a year. The Desert Senita organization has evolved from a hospital and outpatient facility which was run by a large mining company until it ceased local operations in 1986. Following the mine closure, the hospital closed and the outpatient treatment facility relocated to the mine’s former single men’s dormitory, in a more central area of the Ajo community. The health center was then run by hospital management organizations hired by the mining company for a few years, prior to becoming an independently run facility in the late 1990s. Desert Senita has been an independent, outpatient treatment facility since 1997 and became a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in 2001. The health center provides health care for the entire family, including preventative and primary health care services, dental services, behavioral health services, outreach and education programs, and eligibility assistance for AHCCCS and other sliding fee scale and discounted services programs. In January 2010, Desert Senita also added in an in-house pharmacy for our patients’ convenience. In 2017, Desert Senita expanded its services to Arizona City, Arizona. In 2019, Desert Senita completed a multi-phase construction project in Ajo and moved into a brand-new facility in Arizona City in January 2022.

We get it, diabetes is not just a blood sugar issue.

It is the mental load of remembering food, medicine, appointments, blood sugar, and trying to stay on track while still living your life.

And after a while, that can wear a person down, because there is a lot to keep up with.

That is why support matters.

You should not have to feel like you are figuring it all out by yourself.

At Desert Senita, Diabetes Days are built to help make diabetes care feel more manageable, with more time, fewer loose ends, and more support in one visit.

Easy Steps. Big Results. More Control of your Diabetes.

Managing diabetes often feels overwhelming, especially when it comes to food.
Many people believe they need to completely cut out their favorite meals to keep their blood sugar under control. In reality, that is not the goal.

The goal is to create balance. And that starts with small, consistent changes that fit into your daily life.

When Arizona heat starts pushing past 100, diabetes needs a little more attention.

Not because you are doing something wrong.

Because heat can hit people with diabetes harder.

The CDC says people with diabetes can get dehydrated faster, and dehydration can raise blood sugar. It also says high temperatures can change how your body uses insulin, which is one reason checking your blood sugar more often during extreme heat matters.

And here’s something a lot of people do not think about...

Your insulin, supplies, and equipment feel the heat too.

The American Diabetes Association says insulin and other diabetes medicine should not be stored in direct sunlight or in a hot car because high temperatures can affect them.

That matters in real life.

Because in rural Arizona, you may be outside more.

Driving longer.
Working in the heat.
Running errands.
Taking care of family.
And life does not stop just because the weather gets dangerous.

A few simple things can help:

βœ… Drink plenty of water, even before you feel thirsty
βœ… Check your blood sugar more often on very hot days
βœ… Keep your insulin, medicine, and supplies out of the heat
βœ… Pay attention if you feel shaky, dizzy, weak, or off

Because when the heat goes up, staying ahead of it matters.

A simple way to think about insulin is this...

Insulin is like a key.

When you eat, your food turns into sugar that goes into your blood. Insulin helps move that sugar out of your blood and into your cells, where your body uses it for energy.

When insulin is not there, or when the body does not use it well, sugar stays in the blood instead of going where it needs to go.

And when too much sugar stays in the blood, it can hurt the body over time.

πŸ‘Ž It can damage your eyes by hurting the small blood vessels in the back of the eye, which can lead to vision loss.

πŸ‘Ž It can damage your kidneys by harming the tiny filters that clean waste from your blood.

πŸ‘Ž It can damage your nerves, which can cause pain, tingling, or numbness, especially in your feet and hands.

πŸ‘ŽIt can damage your heart and blood vessels by raising the risk of high blood pressure, plaque buildup, heart attack, stroke, and poor blood flow.

That is what makes diabetes serious.

With type-1 diabetes, the body makes little or no insulin.

With type-2 diabetes, the body may still make insulin, but it does not use it well, and over time it may not make enough.

That is why insulin management matters.

It helps move sugar into your cells for energy and helps keep too much sugar from building up in your blood.

A lot of people hear β€œlose weight” and already feel tired.

And that makes sense.

Because with both type-1 and type-2 diabetes, weight loss is not always simple,

Blood sugar changes.
Hunger changes.
Energy changes.
Stress changes.

And sometimes it can feel like one more thing you are being told to do when life is already full.

That is why the goal is not to make food harder.

It is to make it easier to build a meal that works better for your blood sugar and your health.

One simple place to start is the Diabetes Plate Method.

The American Diabetes Association says it is one of the easiest ways to build a healthy lower-carb meal because you do not have to count, calculate, weigh, or measure your food.

You just use your plate.

Half your plate is non-starchy vegetables, one quarter is lean protein, and one quarter is carbohydrate foods.

Why this benefits you?

βœ… It keeps meals simple because you do not have to count every bite
βœ… It can help with portion control without weighing or measuring food
βœ… It can help keep blood sugar from rising too high after meals by limiting carbs to one quarter of the plate

For a lot of people, that means less guessing and less overthinking.

And an easier way to build a meal when you are tired, busy, or just do not want to make food complicated.

And when it comes to the medical side, Desert Senita can help take care of that too through Diabetes Days.

Here’s what we help with:

βœ… 40-minute visits instead of a regular 20-minute visit
βœ… Same-day labs and lab review
βœ… Medication review
βœ… Lifestyle support
βœ… A fuller look at your diabetes care, including your eyes, kidneys, heart, and more
