Q: What is phantom limb pain, and how can a prosthesis help?

A: Phantom limb pain is a common sensation where the missing limb feels painful, tingling, or uncomfortable, even though it is no longer physically present. While the exact cause isn’t fully understood, using a prosthesis can help reduce these sensations by providing sensory feedback, encouraging movement, and improving limb alignment. Physical therapy, desensitization exercises, and proper prosthetic fit also play an important role in managing discomfort.

At Real Life Prosthetics, our clinical team works closely with you, monitoring your progress, adjusting your prosthesis as needed, and connecting you with resources and support for both physical and emotional well-being. Persistent or severe pain should always be discussed with your care team to explore additional management options.

As we celebrate 25-years this month, our hearts are full. This journey has been shaped by the incredible people we have had the honor to care for. Each story, each step forward, each moment of trust has meant more to us than we could ever fully express.

To our patients, past and present, THANK YOU! THANK YOU for placing your trust in our hands and allowing us to walk alongside you. Whether you’ve been with us for decades or just began your journey with us, you are deeply valued and truly appreciated. Some of you have been part of our story since our doors first opened in Abingdon. Over time, those relationships have grown into something much deeper. You are family to us. And that is something we hold close to our hearts. We are thankful for the strength you show, the resilience you carry, and the faith that carries so many through.

Serving you has been one of the greatest blessings these past 25-years.

As we observe Memorial Day, we pause with grateful hearts to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Their sacrifice reflects extraordinary courage, selflessness, and a commitment to protecting the freedoms we hold dear.

At 3 pm local time, during the National Moment of Silence, may we come together in reflection, prayer, and remembrance. We honor the fallen, give thanks for their service, and trust that God’s grace comforts the hearts of those who carry their loss.

Today and always, may we never forget their sacrifice, and may we live in a way that honors their legacy.

25-years ago, we opened our doors with a simple mission… to care for people with honesty, compassion, and purpose. What we did not fully realize then was how much our patients would give back to us.

To every individual and family who has trusted us along the way, THANK YOU! THANK YOU for allowing us into your lives during some of your most vulnerable and most courageous moments, it means everything to us. From our newest patients to those who have been with us since day one, you are part of our story. The relationships built over the years are not just professional; they are personal, lasting, and deeply meaningful. We have laughed together, overcome challenges together, and celebrated victories together. That kind of bond does not fade. We are grateful to God for guiding this journey and for placing each of you in our path.

25-years later, our purpose remains the same… and our gratitude is stronger than ever.

Q: What is the difference between functional and cosmetic prostheses?

A: Functional prostheses are designed to restore mobility, independence, and the ability to perform daily activities, while cosmetic prostheses combine both elements, providing a realistic look while maintaining the functionality needed for walking, work, or recreational activities.

At Real Life Prosthetics, our clinical team works closely with you to understand your lifestyle, goals, and priorities, tailoring your device so it meets both functional needs and aesthetic preferences. With custom components, cosmetic covers, and precise fitting, we can help you achieve a prosthesis that supports mobility, confidence, and quality of life.
