Q: Can I wear my prosthesis at night?

A: Typically, prostheses are removed at night to give your residual limb time to rest, recover, and maintain healthy skin. Wearing your prosthesis while sleeping can increase the risk of skin irritation, pressure sores, or swelling, and may interfere with circulation. Removing it also allows your limb to maintain its shape and reduces the chance of discomfort the next day.

Your prosthetist can provide personalized guidance on when and how long to wear your prosthesis each day, and can offer strategies to protect your limb overnight if needed. Taking this rest period helps keep your prosthesis comfortable, safe, and ready to support you during daily activities.

As we welcome the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, we’re reminded of the value of light, movement, and time spent doing what brings joy and connection.

Summer often means more time outdoors walking on the beach, being near pools and lakes, family gatherings, and simply enjoying the warmth of the season. For those that have prosthetics, having confidence to participate fully in these moments matter deeply.

That’s why waterproof prosthetic solutions can make such a meaningful difference. Designed for active lifestyles, these options help support mobility around water environments, whether it’s splashing with grandchildren, walking along the shoreline, or enjoying time by the pool, while maintaining comfort, durability, and function.

At Real Life Prosthetics, our commitment is to help each person find the right solution for their lifestyle and goals, so that seasons like summer can be experienced with greater freedom and confidence.

Wishing you a safe, bright, and refreshing start to summer! ☀️

Q: How do I know if my prosthesis is fitting correctly?

A: A well-fitting prosthesis should feel comfortable, stable, and allow smooth, natural movement without causing skin irritation. Signs that adjustments may be needed include redness, pain, rubbing, or difficulty walking.

At Real Life Prosthetics, our clinical team works closely with you, carefully assessing fit, alignment, and comfort during follow-up visits. We listen to your feedback, monitor changes in your residual limb, and make precise adjustments so your prosthesis continues to support your mobility and lifestyle. Our goal is to ensure your device fits seamlessly, helping you move safely, confidently, and comfortably every day.

This Flag Day 🇺🇸 we are proud to reflect on a very special piece of Real Life Prosthetics history. On our 25th Anniversary, we were honored to receive an American flag that flew over the United States Capitol… a meaningful symbol of service, perseverance, and the freedoms we cherish.

For more than 25 years, Real Life Prosthetics has been privileged to serve individuals and families throughout Maryland and Delaware, helping patients regain mobility, independence, and confidence. Just as the American flag represents resilience and determination, we are continually inspired by the strength and courage demonstrated by the patients we serve every day.

Today, we celebrate our nation’s flag and the values it represents while expressing our gratitude to our patients, referral partners, team members, veterans, and community members who have been part of our journey.

Happy Flag Day 🇺🇸 from all of us at Real Life Prosthetics.
