Ever notice your toothache gets so much worse the moment you lie down?
It’s not just in your head. Pain usually starts when decay, a crack, or a gum infection reaches the nerve inside the tooth and since the nerve has nowhere to swell, it throbs. Lying down sends more blood to your head, which adds pressure on that inflamed nerve and makes the pain feel even stronger at night.
If it’s happening to you right now, try sleeping with your head raised on two pillows, rinse with warm salt water, and hold a cold compress on your cheek for 15 minutes. Just avoid putting aspirin directly on the gum, as it can burn the tissue. If the pain lasts more than 2 days or comes with swelling or fever, that’s your sign to see a dentist.
Pain that keeps you up at night won’t go away on its own, and the right treatment plan starts with understanding what’s really causing it.
