Tooth decay is caused by the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria feed on sugars and starches from the food we eat, producing acids that erode the enamel (the outer layer of the teeth). Over time, this acid breaks down the enamel, leading to cavities.
Poor oral hygiene, such as improper brushing or not flossing, allows plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—to build up, increasing the risk of decay. Other factors include frequent consumption of sugary foods and drinks, lack of fluoride in water, dry mouth, and certain medical conditions that reduce saliva production.🦷✨
